Seaside Stash Busting blanket – Week 1 (This is exciting – I’m hosting a ‘Crochet Along’)!

img_2994.jpg

Welcome to my ‘Seaside Stash Busting Blanket’… a 35 week Crochet Along which I hosted here on my blog throughout 2018. The first original ‘Week 1’ blog post remains below and all the subsequent weeks with full instructions are here on my blog (go to the menu to access each week).

Update April 2020: I’m very happy to announce that the full pattern in both UK and US crochet terms is now available over in my Ravelry and Etsy Stores.
Here are the links…

Etsy: www.etsy.shop – pattern

My original blanket was a true stash buster made using only yarns I had in my stash. The variety of stitch combinations and colours were inspired each week by the textures and colours of the seaside.

You can use whichever yarns you like but for the best results make sure they are all the same yarn weight and the same yarn type. You can use as many or as little colours as you like. My original blanket had a total of 16 colours in it (seen above).

My finished blanket using DK acrylic yarns measures approximately 110cm x 130cm (43 x 51in) but the finished size will depend on your tension and chosen yarn type.

Update January 2022:

I have also designed a new ‘Seaside Celebration’ colour way (shown below using 10 colours) to celebrate 4 years since the original blanket was launched. It’s slightly smaller than the original and you can read all about that here: Seaside Celebration Blanket

The pattern for this blanket is also available in my Ravelry and Etsy stores:

And now for where it all began…

ORIGINAL BLOG POST – January 2018:

I’m hosting my first ‘Crochet Along’ (CAL) – I’m calling it the ‘Seaside Stash Busting Blanket’ and it would be fabulous if some of you will join me!

Here’s the story behind my idea…

Last week over on Instagram Mollie Makes Magazine hosted ‘Mollie Makers Week’ – each day there was a prompt to share a photo. I was a little late joining in but took part over the last three days where I shared photos of my ‘fave make’, ‘craft stash’ and finally ‘inspiration’.

This is the photo along with my explanation which I shared for ‘craft stash’…

Oh my! Today the prompt is ‘Craft Stash’ for #molliemakersweek – it would be far too embarrassing to show you all of my #craftstash which extends from under our bed, to a basket by the sofa, to a desk in the living room and a cupboard in the hall! It’s not even very well organised I’m afraid!! Having been a maker for all my adult life I’ve accumulated so many things and people who know me and my love of craft have generously given me lots over the years too, especially any unwanted yarn! So here’s just a little snapshot of yarn and fabrics that I brought out into the front garden this morning…

And it’s this photo that really got me thinking about all that yarn and I’ve come up with the fun idea of an unofficial and unplanned ‘Crochet Along’!

Seeing all that yarn under my bed made me really want to use it all to make another blanket but I really don’t want to start a big project like a blanket at the moment- I don’t really have enough time as I have other potential projects and commissions in the pipeline (as well as my day job and family life to keep up with!!!). But how about if I crocheted no more than 4 rows per week and write the pattern as I go? That would mean by about September time (this is going to be a slow CAL!) I’ll have a finished crocheted blanket with the pattern all written up and it wouldn’t have taken over in any way!! 😊

Well that’s what I’ve decided to do and it really would be lovely if you joined me!

I’ll do a blog post each week with the 4 rows worked, together with the written pattern. I’m literally going to make it up as we go along! There’s no pre-planning of colours or stitches… the only rule is that I will only use the DK yarns from my existing stash and do no more than 4 rows per week!

It will be a big blanket and I guess I’ll work about 140 rows meaning if I do 4 rows per week it will take 35 weeks (but I won’t be putting any pressure on myself to finish it by a certain date and I may give myself some weeks off!)

I announced this over on my Instagram on Monday asking if anyone would like to join me and ‘Wow’! – I have been so touched and overwhelmed by the response! I had no idea how many people would want to crochet along with me and I’m so happy that there’s now over 50 people and some are as far away as Australia and the USA! I’m so excited! It’s amazing that there are so many people who are going to join me in this slow and gentle ‘cal’ which will result in a gorgeous blanket, I promise! 😊 😊

(*EDIT* October 2018… many 1000’s of people joined in with this CAL between January and September from over 30 different countries around the world. It became a very special project indeed… ❤️❤️❤️ And many people are starting blankets even now! There’s a thriving Facebook group ‘Coastal Crochet’. All the instructions will remain on my blog in the weekly blog posts so I hope people will make this for many years to come! 😊)

IMG_2947So here goes, first four rows in UK terminology:

Abbreviations: ch: chain, rep: repeat, st(s): stitch(es), tr: treble

With 4.50mm hook (you may prefer using a smaller or larger hook depending on your tension and the yarn you’re using) make 182ch

Row 1 1tr in 4th ch from hook, (3 missed ch count as first tr), 1tr in each ch to end, 3ch (counts as first st of next row), turn (180 sts)

Row 2 Miss first st, 2tr in next st, continue with (miss 1 st, 2tr in next st) to end finishing with 1tr in final st of row and join with a new colour at end of final st, 3ch, turn (89 groups of 2tr with 1 tr at each side)

We are now working ‘V Stitch’ to create the ‘V’s’…

Row 3 Miss first st, continue with (2tr inbetween the sts from previous row) to end, 1tr in final st, join with a new colour at end of final st, 3ch, turn

Row 4 Rep Row 3

IMG_2911 And that’s it… four rows started, put it away, get back to other crochet projects and we’ll do another four rows next week…

IMG_2910 Coincidently, fellow crochet blogger Rosina from ‘Zeens and Roger’ has announced her first CAL this week too! A completely different kind of CAL which sounds fun so head on over to her blog to find out more about it…

Happy crocheting Everyone… 🙂 🙂

  1. It’s a fab idea! I did my first two rows, and after the school run I’m cracking on with the next two! I also seem to have quite a few coastal colours in my stash which is great, so I’m sticking with the coastal theme too. ☺️

      1. Hello Eleonora. I’ve just come across your coastal crochet along blanket and although I’ve missed the crochet along I’d love to do it. Is it possible to get a copy of the pattern that I can print please as it’s very difficult to follow on my phone. Many thanks.

      2. Hi Jen… the pattern isn’t complete yet… I’m literally designing this as we go and we still have about 13 weeks to go… I know that some people are printing it off each week. Good luck..😊❤️❤️

  2. Hi I’ve done my first two rows and about to start on the next two. I’m sticking with the coastal theme two as it will go well with the colours in my room creams and blues.

  3. Love the idea of a spontaneous, slow and gentle CAL. I’d love to join and have plenty of stash to bust, but also far too many projects on the go – I daren’t start something else! I will follow progress with interest.

  4. I look forward to watching the blanket grow. Love the inspiration picture – seaside/crafting – the two seem to go hand in hand! Sitting here needing a seaside fix !

  5. What a fab idea to use some of your stash. Like you I have huge amounts of left overs and look forward to using some on a CAL that is interesting and unobtrusive. Well done x

  6. I just started to sponsor this little girl in Peru and was thinking about making a blanket for her but didn´t really know what kind to go with and also the whole “it´s such a big project” thing was kind of daunting. But this is perfect! So I´m gonna be hitting my stash on the weekend and join you in this relaxed (and my very first) CAL.
    Thanks so much for sharing!

  7. I love that we’re both crocheting along together!! Thank you for the mention. I hope you don’t mind but I’m going to add your CAL to the Ravelry list that Fay from the Crochet Circle Podcast has. She is keeping a list so we can all see what kind of cals are happening in 2018. X

      1. Could you please tell me what weight of yarn you used? Can’t wait to start my blanket. 💙

  8. I love these colors and your photo spot! (Kinda want that back yard if that’s what it is. So cute!) I’ve tried doing a crochet-a-long and learned the hard way…have it all set up before you post it. We ended up with a major hurricane right in the middle and I’ve struggled since to get everything set back up correctly to finish it. (At this point, I’m going to do a full video of the pattern and post it as one.)

    Again, LOVE these colors!

  9. Hi Ele, that’s such a fun idea and good motivation! I have a few projects going at the moment, so when I finish I will try to join in! I’m sure it will be amazing blanket!

  10. I’m in! I need to work on lessening my stash too. I have said on my blog that I shall endeavour not to buy any yarn with acrylic in it this year unless it is for socks. I’ve been good so far 😆 Participating will help me deplete my acrylic stash and create a Christmas present. Another goal is to make all my gifts this year.
Thanks so much for doing this ❤
    Tracey xx

  11. Yay! I’m in! Four rows a week feels doable, and I’ve just finished them this evening and still have time for more crochet this week… Awesome! My stash is falling out of its box so it’s great to have a project I can use some in. Some of the balls are too small to do anything else with so thank you for this fab idea

  12. Week 1 done!! I’ve lots of yarn from my previous cal’s and blankets so this is ideal. 4 rows for this week was just right, fun but not too much. I usually end up falling behind on the cals I have completed. A great idea.

    1. It’s lots of fun Liza… to think that people all over the world are making a blanket at the same time! Good luck with your crochet! This is a gentle and relatively easy project and I’ll give instructions on the way so you may be able to join in and learn as you go! 😊❤️

      1. Hi again, I have a quick question. Sorry I am still in week 1. I had to figure out the American terminology. My question is when I do my foundation chain can I use a double foundation chain, instead of a regular foundation chain? I don’t think it will change your pattern..

Basically this foundation chain is more elatically and a bit easier to count…

  13. I love the idea and what a brilliant motivation! I finally made time and finished 2nd row. I am hoping to finish the rest soon to be ready for more! Thank you Ele!!!

      1. Thank you! Hoping to start soon 🙂 Also, will your Seaside CAL instructions still be up for awhile? I’d love to try out the pattern when I have time!

  14. My friend and I are joining in on this too… a wee bit behind but we’ll catch up! Looking foward to doing this very much 🙂

  15. Hi Eleanora.
Im the friend and Kay is right. We are super excited to join in and create something so lovely. All the different colours from your followers are beautiful and so inspiring. What a cool idea to bring together so many different people from all over the world, to create something out of a shared mutual passion and also something we can be proud of.
    Thankyou😊
    YOU GO GIRL!

  16. Hi Eleonora,
182 ch is a little too big for my first blanket, is there any way I can make is smaller ? Is the starting chain multiples of 2,4 or something else?

    TIA

    Emily

    1. Hello Emilie…. a few people have asked this but because I’m designing this as we go I’m adjusting the stitch pattern on each row to fit with 180 sts. So I can’t give you a stitch multiple that will definitely fit for each row. However so long as you keep to the st count you decide to work with and adjust the turning chains accordingly ( if I need a turning chain of 4 you may need a different number as you may have ended on a different stitch!) then it will work! Hope that makes sense…. good luck! 😊💕

  17. Hi! I’m looking for a scrappy project but I want to make it smaller. What does the starting chain need to be a multiple of please? I’ve seen yours is 182 but I’m struggling to calculate it to asmaller size. (I know I’m late to the party 😂) Thank you

    1. Hi there… never too late!! It’s so hard to give a stitch multiple as I’m adjusting each row to fit with my 180 sts. But many people are doing it smaller. So long as you stick to whatever stitch cont you decide on and adjust the turning chains (as you may end on a different stitch to me) it should work! 😊😊

  18. Just found your blog. Yes, I would like to crochet a blanket, it is now middle of May, so I have some catching up to do, hopefully, I will catch up with you by the end of September.

  19. Have just come across your blog while looking for something to do with all my left over yarn. Your crotchet-along blanket looks great, so I’m going to give it a go. (Although I’ve got a bit of catching up to do). Wish me luck!

  20. Hi. Just found this Cal. Would love to follow. Could you help me with stitch numbers if i want to make a little wider? What multiples +2 do i use for starting chain please?
    Thanks

    1. Hi Robyn…. I haven’t based this pattern on a stitch multiple. As I’m designing it as we go, I’m adjusting each row to keep consistent with my 180 sts. But many people are doing it smaller or bigger…. so long as you keep consistent with your chosen stitch count and adjust the turning chains accordingly (as you may start and end with a different stitch to me) it will work… good luck! 😊❤️

  21. Just stumbled across this, I guess I will have to play catchup… 🙂 Mine will be my saturday morning coffee time.
    Hurry Up Saturday!!!!

      1. Erm, I appear to have two on the go!!! I loved the pattern and I knew who I was giving the original one to, so decided to make another one with different colours for myself. Thank you Eleonora for this awesome pattern!!!!!

  22. Hi Eleonora, how wide does your blanket measures – I see it is 180 stitches but have no idea how wide this will make it.

    1. Hi Michelle… my blanket measures about 110cm using DK weight yarns…. of course everyone has different tension and it also depends on what yarns you choose… but it’s a good sized blanket- about single bed size. 😊❤️
