Welcome to Day 7 of our mushroom walk through crochet!
It suddenly feels like we’re whizzing through the days which is poignant for today because in this part we’re blowing along in the wind. It’s not always easy to capture that gentle breeze in a photo so here’s a little video snippet of some Aspen leaves fluttering in the wind…
And here are some photos that do capture something blowing in the wind!

You can definitely see the wind blowing in these photos taken at the Zaanse Schans in The Netherlands…

This part of our scarf is another Filet crochet section and the pattern created today is some writing – ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’.
The filet crochet writing is very subtle. For me it’s not designed to be really clear… it’s like a hidden message in the scarf that the wearer knows is there, without it drawing the eye too much… yes subtle is the word!

This is the third time we have incorporated filet crochet into our scarf so I hope that for those who had not tried filet crochet before, you’re more familiar now with the technique and will find this part easier!
‘Blowin’ in the Wind’ are special words for me and I’m so happy I could incorporate them into this scarf. I love the sound of the wind through the trees on any walk, especially our mushroom walk. It can be such an exhilarating sound and feeling to have the wind blowing around us. And as we walk along searching for mushrooms that gentle breeze feels good…

It’s also the name of the famous Bob Dylan song which was one of my dear Dad’s favourites… so that song and those words mean a lot!
If you want to incorporate your own words, then I’ve provided a blank chart further down.
But first here’s yesterday’s wonderful round-up of scarves in progress from the Facebook Group and Instagram…

And yesterday I received some of Mrs G Makes (also known as Amanda) mushroom stitch markers in the post.. thank you Amanda… they’re lovely!

So let’s get crocheting…
For those of you who have purchased the printer friendly pattern on Ravelry it has now been updated to include Day 7: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/mushroom-walk-scarf

The next four parts of our scarf are all crocheted in a way that the design features are crocheted upside down. This is because when wearing the scarf, the writing and mushrooms will then all appear the correct way up – it’s all about those finer details!
Here’s a blank chart if you want to create your own message. Remember we’ll be crocheting the writing upside down so that it appears the correct way up when wearing the scarf!!

Simply colour in squares and for filled in squares it’s a block and then clear squares are a space…
This time the pattern is not symmetrical so being right or left handed will make a difference!
If you’re right handed then read all odd numbered rows from left to right and all even numbered rows from right to left.
If you’re left handed read all odd numbered rows from right to left right and all even numbered rows from left to right.
This will ensure the writing appears the correct way. If you’re left handed my advice is to follow the chart as the written pattern is based on following the chart right handed.
Remember each row begins with 3 ch which counts as the first st. After the beginning 3 ch of each row:
White squares are a space: 1ch, miss next st or ch-sp, 1tr in next st.
Black squares are a block: 1tr in next st or ch-sp, 1tr in next st.

Day 7
Blowin’ in the Wind
Stop and have a listen to the gentle breeze through the trees… the leaves are blowin’ in the wind!
We crochet a beautiful piece of writing in our scarf today through filet crochet. The writing is crocheted upside down because when wearing the scarf, the writing will then appear the correct way up – it’s all about the finer details!
Row 151 (RS) Keep RS facing and go back to beginning of Row 150, join Yarn G into 3rd ch of first 4 ch made in Row 150, 3ch (counts as first dc), *1dc in next ch-sp, (1dc in next st, 1dc in next ch-sp) two times, 1dc in each of next 2 sts, repeat from * 5 times, 1dc in next ch-sp, (1dc in next st, 1dc in next ch-sp) two times, 1dc in final st, re-join with Yarn F at final yoh of last st, do not fasten off Yarn G but continue with Yarn F in Row 152, turn. [49 sts]
Row 152 (WS) 4ch (counts as 1 dc and 1 ch), skip next st, 1dc in next st, (1ch, skip next st, 1dc in next st) to end, fasten off but do not cut Yarn F. [25 sts and 24 ch-sps]
Row 153 (WS) Keep WS facing and go back to beginning of Row 152, re-join Yarn G into 3rd ch of first 4 ch made in Row 152, 3ch, (1dc in next ch-sp, 1dc in next st) to end, re-join with Yarn F at final yoh of last st, do not fasten off Yarn G but continue with Yarn F in Row 154, turn. [49 sts]
Row 154 (RS) 1ch (does not count as st), 1sc in first st, (5ch, skip next st, 1sc in next st) to end, turn. [24 x 5-ch-sps]
Row 155 (WS) 3ch, 1sc in next 5-ch-sp, (1ch, skip next st, 1sc in next 5-ch-sp) to final 5-ch-sp, 1dc in final st, re-join with Yarn G at final yoh of last st, fasten off Yarn F, turn. [26 sts and 23 x 1-ch-sps]
Row 156 (RS) 3ch, 1dc in next st, (1dc in next 1-ch-sp, 1dc in next st) until final st, 1dc in final st (which is the top of the 3 ch), turn. [49 sts]
Rows 157 – 175 uses the technique of Filet Crochet in which a combination of spaces or blocks will create a pattern with writing. There is a full written pattern below but you can also follow the chart in which each square represents either a space or block.
Each row begins with 3 ch which counts as the first st. After the beginning 3 ch of each row:
White squares are a space: 1ch, skip next st or ch-sp, 1dc in next st.
Black squares are a block: 1dc in next st or ch-sp, 1dc in next st.
The writing is crocheted upside down because when wearing the scarf the writing will then appear the correct way up – it’s all about the finer details!
The pattern this time is not symmetrical so when reading the chart read all odd numbered rows from left to right and all even numbered rows from right to left. This will be reversed if you are left-handed. This will ensure the writing appears the correct way.
If you’re left handed my advice is to follow the chart as the written pattern is based on following the chart right handed.
