Welcome to Day 1 of our mushroom walk together… this is going to be fun! 😊🍄
You’re in the right place for my ‘Mushroom Walk Scarf’ crochet-along and over the next 10 days we’ll be crocheting this gorgeous scarf together… a scarf inspired by an autumnal walk in nature and looking out for beautiful mushrooms along the way!

The pattern for this scarf will be published in 10 instalments here on my website every morning over the next 10 days… each day a new part of the scarf pattern will be available. Just scroll down towards the end of each blog post and the pattern will be there with lots of step by step photos to help you.
But as usual with my crochet-alongs, before we get to the actual pattern, there will be plenty of extra words and general chit chat from me as well as lots of inspiration photos each day… I feel that really adds to the whole crochet along experience… enjoy it!! 😄
So here’s an introductory chat from me to you… with mushroom inspiration and some music in there too! 💙
There is also a printer friendly PDF pattern available to purchase over in my Ravelry in both UK and US crochet terms. You only pay once and each day the next part will be added and you’ll receive a daily email update. It’s a lovely way to support my work too… thank you!
Ravelry: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/mushroom-walk-scarf
And if you really want to have the whole pattern in one go right now, I’ve uploaded a copy in full to Ravelry and it’s also over on my Etsy too…

So let’s get started and begin our mushroom walk!

Our mushroom walk scarf begins at home as we put on our boots and wrap up in a shawl, ready to head outside. We’ll be crocheting a silhouette of a pair of boots and a shawl using the technique of Filet crochet.

It’s been unseasonably warm so far this autumn on the south east coast of England and I haven’t really worn boots or a shawl yet… but that changed at the weekend… just in time for us to think about moving to a winter wardrobe and the first part of our scarf… Yes, scarf weather has arrived! 😄
This was me yesterday… not on a mushroom walk but still enjoying wearing my scarf!

Mushrooms are beautiful and fascinating! With so many different shapes, sizes and colours they really can be a sight to behold. And of course the quintessential Fly Agaric is simply stunning when spotted out in the wild…

When I say mushroom walk, what I really mean is a walk outside in nature, keeping observant with a purpose to try and spot some mushrooms in the wild. I don’t pick them, I leave them where they are, although I know some can be foraged and some are very poisonous!
I’m not an expert in any way but I do know that I appreciate their beauty and I do so love taking photos. Here’s a good little read about fungi from the Sussex Wildlife Trust: https://sussexwildlifetrust.org.uk/news/how-to-identify-fungi
And there’s a brilliant little free email course they offer which you can sign up to here… i did it and really enjoyed a daily bite-size email for 7 days teaching me about a different fungi each day! 🙂 🍄 https://sussexwildlifetrust.pro.typeform.com.facebook.com
Ok, let’s go! Let’s begin our mushroom walk through crochet…

Here are a couple of tips to help you get the most out of a crochet along (CAL)…
- Embrace the CAL community. There will be lots of people from all over the world crocheting this scarf at the same time so do share your progress photos, ask questions and encourage each other. The Facebook Group ‘Coastal Crochet’ is a great place to get to know each other and over on Instagram you can connect and share using the hashtags #mushroomwalkscarf and #coastalcrochetcal
- Join the Facebook Group here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1998235366871590
- Don’t struggle on your own. The beauty of a CAL is that you know there are lots of people crocheting this scarf at the same time as you. There will be a vast array of experience with some people who have crocheted for years and others just starting out. Please do ask questions and look closely at the step-by-step photos. Don’t over think the pattern. Read it slowly and do exactly what it says. If it still doesn’t make sense to you, then do ask and someone will help! Crocheter’s are a very friendly bunch… 😄

Day 1
It’s Autumn… time for boots and a shawl.
Let’s begin our mushroom walk! We’ve decided where to go and we’ve decided how to get there… but first we need to put on our boots and perhaps a little shawl. After long summer days, it’s starting to feel a little cooler as autumn approaches and the mushrooms begin to appear…
Measurements The finished scarf using DK yarn makes a large cosy scarf measuring approximately 260cm x 28cm (102in x 11in). The scarf can be made using other yarns and appropriately sized hook but the finished results may vary. For a smaller scarf use a thinner 4 ply yarn.
Materials I used ten colours of Emu ‘Classic DK’ (100% acrylic, 100g/282m/308yds). 1 ball in each of the following colours:
Yarn A: Garnet (118)
Yarn B: Pepper Red (119)
Yarn C: Pumpkin (115)
Yarn D: Sunburst (148)
Yarn E: Herby (146)
Yarn F: Ivy (145)
Yarn G: Pecan (113)
Yarn H: Biscotti (111)
Yarn I: Cream (102)
Yarn J: Aqua (108)
- 4.00mm (US G/6) hook (or hook to match tension), stitch marker, yarn needle and scissors.
Tension
Using DK yarn my first panel measures 28cm x 22cm (11in x 8.75in). I recommend crocheting the first panel to see which hook size will suit your tension and yarn choice best. Make sure you’re happy with the feel and look of the stitches before going further.
Pattern Notes
The turning chains count as a stitch throughout unless indicated otherwise. You may want to use a stitch marker in the top of the turning chains making it easier to identify them as the correct stitch to crochet into at the end of the subsequent row.
Join a new colour at the final yoh of the final stitch of a row when indicated, do not fasten off the previous colour used until indicated as it will be brought up the sides of the work during the colour changing rows. This reduces the amount of ends.

To Work
This first panel uses the technique of Filet Crochet in which a combination of spaces or blocks will create a central pattern showing boots and a shawl. It creates a lovely subtle effect.
The spaces and blocks are created entirely using either treble (US double crochet) stitches and chains so it’s a simple technique and easily achievable I promise.
There is a full written pattern below but for Rows 2 – 19 you can also follow the chart which is simple to follow and in which each square represents either a space or block.
The pattern is symmetrical so it doesn’t matter if you’re left handed. Follow even numbered rows right to left and odd numbered rows from left to right.
Each row begins with 3 ch which counts as the first st. After the beginning 3 ch of each row:
White squares are a space and you’ll crochet 1ch, miss next st or ch-sp, 1tr in next st.
Black squares are a block and you’ll crochet 1tr in next st or ch-sp, 1tr in next st.
Using Yarn A make 51ch.
Row 1 (RS) 1tr in 4th ch from hook (the 3 missed ch count as first tr), 1tr in each ch to end, turn. [49 sts]
Row 2 (WS) 4ch (counts as first tr and 1 ch here and throughout), miss next st, 1tr in next st, (1ch, miss next st, 1tr in next st) to end (pay attention to crochet into the final st which is the top of the 3 ch), turn. [25 sts and 24 ch-sps]
Row 3 (RS) 4ch, miss next ch-sp, 1tr in next st, (1ch, miss next ch-sp, 1tr in next st) 2 times, (1tr in next ch-sp, 1tr in next st) 7 times, (1ch, miss next ch-sp, 1tr in next st) 4 times, (1tr in next ch-sp, 1tr in next st) 7 times, (1ch, miss next ch-sp, 1tr in next st) 3 times (the final st to crochet into is the 3rd ch of the beginning 4 ch made at start of previous row – each row up until Row 19 will end like this), turn.

Row 4 4ch, miss next ch-sp, 1tr in next st, (1ch, miss next ch-sp, 1tr in next st) 2 times, 1tr in each of next 14 sts, (1ch, miss next ch-sp, 1tr in next st) 4 times, 1tr in each of next 14 sts, (1ch, miss next ch-sp, 1tr in next st) 3 times, turn.
