Welcome to Week 1 of my Pura Vida blanket crochet-along… it’s lovely to have you here and over the next 6 weeks we will crochet this fun, colourful and vibrant blanket together! 💚

A blanket inspired by the Costa Rican greeting ‘Pura Vida’!
Here’s a welcome introductory chat from me… I hope you enjoy it and learn more about the inspiration behind this blanket! 🙂
All the practical introductory information with yarn recommendations and more inspiration photos for this blanket can be found here: https://coastalcrochet.com/2025/09/26/pura-vida-crochet-along🦋/

The free pattern is further below – there’s also a printer friendly PDF pattern available to purchase on my Ravelry with versions in both UK and US crochet terms.

You only pay once and each week the next instalment will be added to the pattern which you will have full access to. At the end of the 6 weeks you’ll have the full pattern to keep. It’s a lovely way to support my work… thank you!

The Facebook Group ‘Coastal Crochet’ is a great place to ask questions, share progress and get to know each other or on Instagram you can share using the hashtags #puravidablanket and #coastalcrochetcal
And Iris from Een Mooi Gebaar is translating it into Dutch… https://eenmooigebaar.nl

This week we will be crocheting Parts 1 and 2 of the original crochet-along as it featured in the magazine.
All the photos I’ll be sharing from Costa Rica throughout the crochet along were taken by my son Morgan in 2022… they’re absolutely wonderful! Costa Rica looks so beautiful and one day I hope to take my blanket there… 😊🦋💚
In Week 1 we will be crocheting rows of gorgeous greens inspired by the vibrant colours of the rainforests…

And then we crochet rows of textured colours as we see flashes of red, yellow and blue as the macaws fly by!

We then use raised stitches to crochet tropical trees…

Before emerging from those trees onto beautiful sandy beaches and hearing the sounds of the ocean waves…

So here goes… I hope you love making this blanket as much as I loved designing and making it too!
ENJOY IT and Pura Vida… 💚🦋
Pattern Notes
The blanket is mainly crocheted in rows with the beautiful creatures crocheted separately and sewn on.
The turning chains count as a stitch throughout unless indicated otherwise. You may want to use a stitch marker in the top of the turning chains making it easier to identify them as the correct stitch to crochet into at the end of the subsequent row.
When changing colour join the new colour at the final yoh of the final stitch of a row when indicated.
The animal appliqués will benefit from blocking to help set the shape before sewing onto the blanket.
