Beachcombing Blanket – Week 10

Welcome to Week 10 of my ‘Beachcombing Blanket’ crochet along! How the weeks are flying by… 🙂 These are the final rows to our top and bottom panels and this week they are inspired by sand, seaglass, driftwood and shells!

I search for them in this weeks video, and there’s a silver sea too… enjoy!

Earlier this week I received an email from Marilyn who has recently discovered my blog and is currently crocheting my ‘Seaside Blanket‘ . Marilyn has put together a poem based on some of the mentions in my blog posts. I was so touched and it’s just so lovely that I must share it here…

Coastal Pleasures

How relaxing, the sound of waves
Washing over the pebbled shore
Bringing many treasures
Tempting me to explore

Tossed around by the sea
Worn smooth over many years
Little jewels of coloured sea glass
And inside rock pools, sea anemones

Driftwood, shells and large smooth stones
Just a few items to be found
The stones can be used as paperweights
After they have been crocheted around

Sometimes rough and sometimes calm
The sea changes every day
And depending on the weather
It can be the deepest blue or very grey

What wonderful colours can be seen
As the sun sets in the evening sky
Yellow, pink and orange
Such a pretty sight

Tomorrow I will search again
As the sea retreats
To see what it has left behind
And what I may decide to keep

Isn’t that just fabulous! 🙂 And while we’re on the topic of words, it’s been a while since I picked up a book to read. Crochet keeps me very busy and instead of reading a book I’m often found on my phone catching up with the social media side of Coastal Crochet! But I’ve just managed to start reading for pleasure again… it’s a tiny bit beachcombing related because the book I’m reading is called ‘The Shell Seekers‘ by Rosamunde Pilcher.

Lucy from Attic 24 recommended it last year when she released her Dune Blanket – it caught my eye and I bought a copy of the book then but have just never got round to reading it… until now! It was also recommended by the clothing company ‘Seasalt’. They have a blog and posted SEASALT WORDS: STORIES FROM THE SEA…

Ravelry Pattern for Beachcombing Blanket

The weather has finally turned after weeks of summer sunshine… but that didn’t stop me beachcombing! It doesn’t have to be sunny to visit the beach… I rather like those days when the sea looks silver or grey to reflect the darker skies. Have a look at the video I recorded which shows it perfectly! And here are three photos of silver grey seas I’ve taken during the last year…

So this weeks rows are inspired by sand, seaglass, driftwood and shells…

PATTERN IN UK CROCHET TERMINOLOGY.

Abbreviations

ch: chain

ch-sp(s): chain space(s)

dc: double crochet

dtr: double treble

htr: half treble

RS: right side

RtrtrF2tog: Raised triple treble front two stitches together (see below)

ss: slip stitch

st(s): stitch(es)

tr: treble

trtr: triple treble

WS: wrong side

yoh: yarn over hook

Bobble: Complete all the following in the same stitch: with contrasting colour yarn, *yarn over hook (yoh), insert hook into st, yoh, pull contrasting yarn through to front, yoh, pull through 2 loops, repeat from * 4 times more (you should now have 5 contrasting colour loops and 1 main colour loop on hook), pull main colour yarn through all the loops on the hook (1 bobble made), continue with main colour, push bobble towards front of work, carry contrasting colour yarn along behind work and crochet next stitches around it to carry yarn along invisibly behind the work.

RtrtrF2tog: Raised triple treble front two stitches together: *complete a triple treble st as normal but insert hook around the stem of the st inserting hook from right to left going from the front to the back and then round to the front again, stop at last yoh ** when there are only 2 loops left on hook, repeat from * around stem of next st ending at ** (there should now be 3 loops left on the hook, yoh and pull through all the loops on hook.

Week 10 – Sand, Seaglass, Driftwood and Shells

Continue with the top and bottom panels crocheting these rows inspired by sand, seaglass, driftwood and waves!

5 colours are used: Yarns A, C F, G and J.

Pattern Notes

The top and bottom panels will continue to be crocheted. Row 17 continues on from the end of Row 16 from Week 9 when we joined with Yarn A at the end of the final st.

When joining a new colour do so at the final yoh of the final st of the row as indicated. Fasten off the previous colour used and continue onto next row with new colour.

Row 17 (RS) 4ch (counts as first dtr), 1dtr in each of next 3 sts, * 1htr in each of next 3 sts, 1dc in each of next 3 sts, 1htr in each of next 3 sts, 1dtr in each of next 8 sts, repeat from * nine times, 1htr in each of next 3 sts, 1dc in each of next 3 sts, 1htr in each of next 3 sts, 1dtr in each of next 4 sts, turn. [187 sts]

Row 18 1ch (does not count as st), 1dc in first st and each st to end, turn.

Row 19 1ch (does not count as st), 1dc in first st and each of next 7 sts, (1 bobble with Yarn F in next st, 1dc in each of next 16 sts) ten times, 1 bobble with Yarn F in next st, 1dc in each of next 8 sts, turn. [187 sts including 11 bobbles]

Row 20 2ch (counts as first htr), 1htr in next st and each st to end, join with Yarn G at end of final st, turn.

Here’s a tutorial for Row 21.

Row 21 (RS) 1ch (does not count as st), 1dc in first st and each of next 15 sts, (miss next st working RtrtrF2tog around the two central dtr sts below from Row 17, 1dc in each of next 16 sts) ten times, 1dc in final st (pay attention to crochet into the final htr from previous row and the top of the beginning 2 ch), join with Yarn J at end of final st, turn.

Here’s a tutorial for Rows 22 – 24.

Row 22 2ch (counts as first htr), 1htr in next st and each st to end, join with Yarn C at end of final st, turn. [187 sts]

Row 23 (RS) 1ch (does not count as st), 1dc in first st and next st, miss 3 sts, 7dtr in next st, (1ch, miss 7 sts, 7dtr in next st) 22 times, miss 3 sts, 1dc in each of final 2 sts (pay attention to crochet into the final htr from previous row and the top of the beginning 2 ch), join with Yarn J at end of final st, turn. [23 shells]

Row 24 1ch (does not count as st), 1dc in first st and next st, *1dc in each of next 7 sts around shell, 1dc in central st of the missed 7 htr sts from Row 22 below, repeat from * 21 times, 1dc in each of next 7 sts around final shell, 1dc in each of final 2 sts, join with Yarn A at end of final st turn. [187 sts]

Here’s a tutorial for Rows 25 – 27.

Row 25 3ch (counts as first tr), 1tr in next st, *1htr in each of next 2 sts, 1dc in each of next 3 sts, 1htr in each of next 2 sts, 1tr in next st, repeat from * to final st, 1tr in final st, turn.

Row 26 1ch (does not count as st), 1dc in first st and each st to end, turn.

Row 27 (RS) 1ch (does not count as st), 1dc in first st and each of next 15 sts, * 1 bobble with Yarn F in next st, 1dc in each of next 16 sts, repeat from * nine times, 1dc in final st, fasten off. [187 sts including 10 bobbles]

Repeat all rows on opposite end of blanket.

Weave in all ends.
