Brendan Bluebird!

I’m very happy to introduce a new design – ‘Brendan Bluebird’! 😃

I’ve designed and made this for a wonderful community project in The Netherlands. I mentioned in a previous blog post that I was contacted by Esmerelda from The Netherlands who is behind ggdw2018 on Instagram and she wrote the following…

“Every bird sings its own song…

The birds may be made in various ways from various materials: knitting, crocheting, quilting, embroidery, felting, drawn, dyed as long as it is made of textile, wool, yarn, etc. With a hook or loop to put it on a line.
Size is max. 25 cm high and 15 cm wide
Deadline is 31 May 2019.
The longest line of birds will be presented during the Textiel Festival Weerribben on 14, 15 and 16 June 2019 and all submitted birds will form a whole. The theme of this festival is “Strange Birds”.
Afterwards all birds will be donated to several charities.
Can you participate in this new international people power project? – Love, Esmeralda”

So Brendan will be flying his way over to The Netherlands!! It sounds like such a lovely community project that I’m very happy to take part in and it would be lovely if some of you lovely readers contributed too… 😊

There are lots of crochet bird patterns around but I wanted to design my own…

Here’s the free pattern… Brendan Bluebird

Why did I call him Brendan? Well I thought it would be nice to have a name which started with the letter ‘B’ and I also wanted it to have some kind of link to Brendan’s coastal origins, as he is flying to The Netherlands from our coastal location! So I Googled ‘nautical names’ and discovered an article on the website Mom Junction called ’50 Gutsy And Valiant Nautical Baby Names For Boys And Girls’. And I saw that Brendan meant:

Brendan, as in Saint Brendan, refers to the patron saint of the sailor. St. Brendan is believed to have been sailed across the Atlantic Ocean in search for the Isle of the Blessed. He is even said to be the first person to have set foot on the American soil. He was carried to the Heavens by the angels. This sailor baby name originated from the Welsh word ‘breehin’ and means ‘prince’.

I thought that was a very fitting name for my Bluebird which will fly across the sea to be a part of a community project! If you have a look at the article by clicking on the link above you’ll see an adorable baby photo with some accompanying crochet by pure coincidence!! 🙂
