Oh how I love the classic granny square! To many the humble granny square is their first memory or introduction to crochet. But for me, despite loving crochet and loving the granny square look, it’s not something I’ve personally crocheted very much of.
So my next project is a granny square blanket…
My crochet for Part 2 of the International Diploma in Crochet course has come to a halt as I have submitted my first three samples but not heard back or had feedback on them yet. I don’t want to proceed any further until I know I’m on the right track so I need an easy project to bridge the gap…
I really love this ‘Drops Karisma’ yarn. It’s 100% wool, washable (important for a blanket) and affordable- only £2 per ball!
I have this book…
…and it’s taught me the ‘join-as-you-go method’ which I think is absolutely brilliant! I’ve always been daunted by all those squares to join together when making a blanket but this is a great alternative to waiting to the end and having a huge task on your hands. The blanket grows as you go and as you can see, it’s getting there…
It’s so simple – instead of the chain 1 between the trebles you double crochet 1 into the space of the next square and so on.
For those of you who read my ‘Snow Dogs’ post last week you may remember I mentioned a fluffy snow dog that I still wanted to find. Well this weekend we managed to find it! It’s just inside the entrance to the Brighton Dome and is affectionately named ‘Roodle’- adorable!
Isn’t it gorgeous!
And we also found a ‘disco dog’…
So I’ll carry on with my granny squares this week. They are certainly easy to crochet anytime, anywhere – no pattern to follow and very satisfying seeing the blanket grow before my eyes. 🙂

Drop yarn is just so yummy, your blanket is going to be fabulous. I borrowed that book from our local library and made the granny stripe scarf from it. It has some lovely ideas… Loving the fluffy and disco dogs too. Looking forward to seeing your finished blanket.
