I’m gradually crocheting my way through the samples I need to complete and submit as part of the International Diploma in Crochet. Two of the samples ask for Tunisian Crochet. One in Tunisian simple stitch using one colour and the other using two colours to give a tweed effect.
Well I have never tried Tunisian crochet before so I’m happy to be giving it a go. First of all I needed to get myself a Tunisian crochet hook…
Coincidentally, the new issue of the British magazine ‘Simply Crochet’ (which went on sale today) has a free 6mm Tunisian crochet hook and a supplement with patterns in it!
Once I got used to using the hook I enjoyed the technique and the samples crocheted up quickly. Here’s my first sample of Tunisian simple stitch…
…and here’s the second sample using two colours. I really like the tweed effect it gives.
One of the samples needed to have a double crochet and crab stitch border around it- another new stitch for me (I hadn’t tried crab stitch before).
The fabric it creates is dense which would be great for some projects. Something I learned as part of the course is that the size of the Tunisian hook should be 2 – 4 times larger than that recommended on the yarn ball band. This is so true as my samples which use a DK weight yarn were crocheted using a 6mm hook. Any smaller and the resulting fabric would have been much heavier with little drape.
If you haven’t tried Tunisian crochet before, give it a go!

Hmm. I never got into Tunisian crochet but now I wonder if it’s because I was using yarn that was too bulky for my hook size. Must try again! Thanks! 🙂

I think your first two samples of Tunisian looks brillant and such an even tension. Good luck when you submit them. I have just done those two as well but with a 5.00mm hook and now that I have got my issue of Simply Crochet with the free 6.00 hook I wish I had waited. My fabric looks very dense and tight ……. not sure whether to send them anyway and see what happens. I like the technique but am not sure what I might make with it. J xx

First sample I made was just little bigger than yours. And it rolled up and somehow got wider.. I think if you master this, bigger ones will also be fine
I’ve never tried Tunisian crochet but you have piqued my interest. That tweed might make a nice bag.

I love the effect of the two colour crochet. I have tried Tunisian but I think I used too small a hook. It was hard work and it frustrated me, I have half a dishcloth right now! Maybe I shall get back to it one day

Your stitches look great! I find that softer yarns, limp you might say, work well with Tunisian crochet. Also, if you feel the stitches are too tight you can go ever farther up in hopk sizes with some interesting results. Or try some fingering weight yarn with the same hook. It is interesting the different effects you can get using Tunisian crochet.

Thank you for posting pics of your swatches, I’m just doing mine, did you get lots of ends to sew in with the two colour one? Looking at your pic, I may be doing it wrong, I’m only picking up the alternative colour on the reverse pass, looks lovely but now I don’t think it’s right! Oh dear, back to the drawing board haha.
Hi there, thanks for your comments- There were only two ends to sew in with the two coloured swatch as you are constantly using the two yarns without cutting the yarn at the end of rows. I really like the two coloured tweed effect it gives. Its been a while since I did these and did Tunisian crochet. There’s more in Part 2 of the crochet diploma so I’ll have to refresh my memory soon! Good Luck! 🙂 🙂
