Let’s crochet some baskets… free pattern!

I do love a crocheted basket and here I’m sharing a free pattern for my baskets with you all – just in time for Easter! 🐣 🌸

I think crocheted baskets look really good, they have lots of practical and pretty uses, they are simple and super quick to crochet, and they make fantastic gifts too! 😃

Actually my little baskets are a little more of a bowl shape which is something I really like and very easy to create…

The key to creating the bowl shape is to have the inside of the basket facing you as you go round crocheting…

The same design but simply turning it the other way round so that you’re crocheting with the outside of the basket facing you creates a more traditional, straight sided basket shape like this…

The choice is yours entirely, although personally I adore the bowl shape for holding all the little things in place…

They can stack quite nicely too…

I made my baskets to put some mini chocolate Easter eggs into and it’s a lovely way to display them or to gift them.

So here’s the pattern… enjoy!

CROCHETED BASKETS

Materials

I used Hoooked Ribbon XL yarn for the baskets pictured which is a chunky yarn (80% recycled cotton, 20% other). You can use other chunky yarns for similar results. Thinner yarns will simply create smaller baskets… it’s fun to experiment!

I used an 8mm (US L/11) crochet hook but choose a hook size that suits your tension and chosen yarn.

Pattern Notes

1) A super chunky yarn works best for these baskets. T-shirt yarns work well.

2) Choose a hook size smaller than recommended on the ball band. Using a smaller hook size creates tighter crochet stitches which are sturdy and hold their form which is what you need for a basket. You don’t want them to be too floppy!

3) The basket is made working in a continuous spiral without closing off the round with a slip stitch.

4) It will help to use a stitch marker in the last stitch of each round, moving it up as you work.

5) The baskets are made with simple double crochet stitches (that’s a US single crochet). The pattern is written in UK terms.

Abbreviations

ch: chain

dc: double crochet (US single crochet)

ss: slip stitch

st: stitch

To Work

Make 4 ch, ss to first ch to join into a ring (or make a magic ring).

Round 1 1ch (does not count as st), 6dc into the ring. [6 sts]

Round 2 2dc in each st around. [12 sts]

Round 3 (1dc in next st, 2dc in next st) 6 times. [18 sts]

Round 4 (2dc in next st, 1dc in each of next 2 sts) 6 times. [24 sts]

Round 5 (1dc in each of next 3 sts, 2dc in next st) 6 times. [30 sts]

Round 6 (1dc in each of next 2 sts, 2dc in next st, 1dc in each of next 2 sts) 6 times. [36 sts]

Rounds 7 – 10 1dc in each st around. At end of final round ss into first st of next round, fasten off and weave in ends.

You can continue with more rounds to make your basket taller.

You can also make smaller baskets by stopping at the end of Round 4 or 5 and then going straight to Round 7.

Enjoy them, I wish you all a very Happy Easter and Happy Crocheting Everyone… 😊
