Welcome to Day 4 of my ‘Coastal Crochet Coasters‘ CAL! 🙂 I’m so loving seeing all your coasters in progress and it’s just wonderful that so many of you are joining in and enjoying these little projects… 🙂 Today we have a beach scene to crochet!

Todays coaster design is very different to the others in that it’s worked in rows and is finished off with some surface crochet to create a sunny little beach scene…

For all the coasters I used: Scheepjes Cahlista (100% cotton, 50g/85m), 1 ball in each of the following colours: Yarn A Crystalline (385), Yarn B Rich Coral (410), Yarn C Vivid Blue (146), Yarn D Lemonade (403), Yarn E Cyan (397), Yarn F Snow White (106).
3.5mm hook (or hook size to suit your tension), yarn needle, scissors
Abbreviations: UK Crochet Terminology is used (see bottom of page for US terms).
ch: chain, ch-sp(s): chain space(s), dc: double crochet, htr: half treble, mm: millimetres, RS: right side, ss: slip stitch, st(s): stitch(es), tr: treble, WS: wrong side, yoh: yarn over hook.
Beach Scene Square Coaster
Pattern Notes
This is a square shaped coaster worked in rows. Colour changes are used to create the beach scene. When changing colours do not fasten off the last colour, leave it hanging behind work ready to re-join when next needed. The square is finished off using surface crochet chains.
To Work:
Using Yarn D make 18 ch.
Row 1 (RS) 1dc in second ch from hook and each ch to end, turn. [17 sts]
Row 2 (WS) 1ch (does not count as st here and throughout), 1dc in each st to end, turn. [17 sts]
Row 3 (RS) 1ch, 1dc in each of next 12 sts changing to Yarn C at final yoh of twelfth st, 1dc in each of next 5 sts, turn. [17 sts]
Row 4 (WS) 1ch, 1dc in each of next 8 sts (crocheting around Yarn D for the final 3 sts to bring Yarn D invisibly behind work), change to Yarn D at final yoh of eighth st, 1dc in each of next 9 sts, turn.
Row 5 1ch, 1dc in each of next 5 sts changing to Yarn C at final yoh of fifth st, 1dc in each of next 12 sts (crocheting around the loose strand from Yarn C for first 4 sts to neaten), turn.
Row 6 1ch, 1dc in each of next 13 sts changing to Yarn D at final yoh of thirteenth st, 1dc in each of next 4 sts, turn.
Row 7 1ch, 1dc in each of next 2 sts changing to Yarn C at final yoh of second st, 1dc in each of next 15 sts (crocheting around the loose strand from Yarn C for first 2 sts to neaten), turn.
Rows 8 – 9 1ch, 1dc in each st to end, turn.
Row 10 1ch, 1dc in each st to end, changing to Yarn E at final yoh of final st, turn.
Rows 11 – 12 1ch, 1dc in each st to end, turn.
Row 13 1ch, 1dc in each st to end, changing to Yarn B at final yoh of final st, turn.
Row 14 1ch, 1dc in each of next 2 sts (crocheting around Yarn E to bring Yarn E invisibly behind work) changing to Yarn E at final yoh of second st, 1dc in each of next 15 sts, turn. [17 sts]
Row 15 1ch, 1dc in each of next 14 sts changing to Yarn B at final yoh of fourteenth st, 1dc in each of next 3 sts, turn. [17 sts]
Row 16 1ch, 1dc in each of next 4 sts changing to Yarn E at final yoh of fourth st, 1dc in each of next 13 sts, turn. [17 sts]
Row 17 1ch, 1dc in each of next 13 sts changing to Yarn B at final yoh of thirteenth st, 1dc in each of next 4 sts, fasten off. [17 sts]
Border
With RS facing join Yarn A to outer right st on top edge, 2ch (counts as first htr), 2htr in same st, 1htr in each of next 15 sts, 3htr in final st, 15htr evenly down side edge, 3htr in bottom corner, 15htr evenly across bottom edge, 3htr in corner, 15htr evenly up side edge, ss to top of first 2 ch, fasten off.
Using photo as a guide, surface crochet chains are made to complete the waves and water’s edge using Yarn F and the sun’s rays using Yarn B.
And that’s it for today… tomorrow we have our very final coaster!

Hi Eleonora. I made the main part of this coaster last night and just have the border and surface chains to complete. I presume the back of this coaster will not be quite so neat because the white yarn is carried across to make the clouds. It would have been good to see the back of the coaster 🙂
