Coastal Coasters CAL… Day 3

Welcome to Day 3 of my ‘Coastal Crochet Coasters CAL’! And today might be my favourite… it’s a starfish design set within a pentagon! 🙂 The clocks turned back by one hour last night here in the UK… an extra hours sleep was wonderful!

Starfish are such fascinating and beautiful sea creatures and with most having five arms, my starfish design sits perfectly within the five sided pentagon shape! Here’s a starfish I photographed which we sadly saw washed up on shore in Corfu last year…

I’ve used the wonderful starfish shape in quite a few of my previous crochet designs…

And I’m so happy it’s made an appearance again!

And I do love these groynes which are in Eastbourne along the Sussex coast… they made perfect little table tops for a little photo shoot by the sea! Coastal Crochet coasters in action! 🙂

For all the coasters I used: Scheepjes Cahlista (100% cotton, 50g/85m), 1 ball in each of the following colours: Yarn A Crystalline (385), Yarn B Rich Coral (410), Yarn C Vivid Blue (146), Yarn D Lemonade (403), Yarn E Cyan (397), Yarn F Snow White (106).

A 3.5mm hook (or hook size to suit your tension), yarn needle, scissors.

Abbreviations: UK Crochet Terminology is used (see bottom of page for US terms).

ch: chain, ch-sp(s): chain space(s), dc: double crochet, htr: half treble, mm: millimetres, RS: right side, ss: slip stitch, st(s): stitch(es), tr: treble, WS: wrong side, yoh: yarn over hook.

Starfish Pentagon Coaster

Pattern Notes

This is a pentagon shaped coaster. The central starfish is made first and then the pentagon shape is crocheted around it. The RS of the work is facing you at all times.

To Work:

Starfish

Using Yarn B make 4ch, ss to first ch to join into a ring.

Round 1 3ch (counts as first tr), 14tr into the ring, ss to top of first 3 ch to join. [15 sts]

Round 2 *6ch, 1dc in second ch from hook going under top strand only, 1dc in next ch, 1htr in each of next 2 ch, 1tr in next ch, miss 2 sts from Round 1, ss in next st, repeat from * four times more. [5 starfish arms]

Round 3 Going around entire starfish work 1ss in each st or remaining loop from ch in Round 2, work 3ss into each st at top points of the starfish arms, ss to first st, fasten off.

Main Coaster

Join Yarn D to top point of any of the starfish arms going behind the 3 ss made in Round 3 of starfish. Make 1ch (does not count as a st)

Round 1 1dc in same place as 1 ch, (9ch, 1dc in top of next starfish arm going behind the 3 ss) four times, 9ch, ss to first dc of round.

Round 2 3ch (counts as first tr here and throughout), (9tr in next 9-ch-sp, 1tr in next st) four times, 9tr in final 9-ch-sp, ss to top of beginning 3 ch. [50 sts]

Round 3 3ch, 4tr into same st at base of 3 ch, 1tr in each of next 9 sts, (5tr in next st, 1tr in each of next 9 sts) four times, ss to top of beginning 3 ch, fasten off. [70 sts]

Round 4 Join Yarn F to any central st of the 5 tr group, 1ch (does not count as a st), 3dc into same st as 1 ch, 1dc in each of next 13 sts, (3dc in next st, 1dc in each of next 13 sts) four times, ss to first dc, fasten off and weave in ends.

This coaster in particular will benefit from a little blocking to really help set the shape…
