Coastal Coasters CAL… Day 1

Welcome to Day 1 of my mini crochet along (CAL) – it’s the ‘Coastal Crochet Coasters CAL‘! 😊

As the nights draw in, the days get shorter and the weather turns unsettled here on the south coast, this sunset yesterday evening was particularly special, and the perfect opportunity to capture these coasters in action! 😍🍷

I even managed to record a little introductory video… enjoy! πŸ™‚

So, over the next five days I’ll share one coaster pattern with you all each day… πŸ™‚ I do love a crocheted coaster and they make such fabulous gifts, especially for popping into an envelope with a card and posting off to loved ones (thinking ahead to Christmas time!) πŸ™‚

Make one of each coaster over the next five days or maybe make more than one each day and create a set of each design… it’s entirely up to you! Mix and match and have fun!

The patterns will be posted each day here on my blog.

But if you prefer a digital printer friendly download then the full pattern for all five coasters in both UK and US crochet terminology is available to purchase now in both my Ravelry and Etsy stores. Here are the links…

The lovely thing about a crochet along is that people from all over the world are all crocheting the same thing at around the same time. It’s so wonderful to be able to see what others are up to and share progress photos with each other. You can do that in the Facebook Group β€˜Coastal Crochet’ or use the hashtag #coastalcrochetcoasters over on Instagram… πŸ™‚

I can’t wait to see all your coasters! 😍

Each coaster design is different and each coaster is created based on a different shape… today we start with an Octagon!

You will need:

For the coasters pictured I used ‘Scheepjes Cahlista’ which is an aran weight cotton yarn but of course you can experiment with a variety of yarns. These coasters make great stash busting projects as only a little yarn is needed for each coaster.

I used Scheepjes Cahlista (100% cotton, 50g/85m), 1 ball in each of the following colours:

Yarn A Crystalline (385),

Yarn B Rich Coral (410),

Yarn C Vivid Blue (146),

Yarn D Lemonade (403),

Yarn E Cyan (397),

Yarn F Snow White (106)

If you’re using 6 colours like me, it’s a good idea to organise and label your yarn colours…

You’ll also need a 3.5mm hook (or hook size to suit your tension), yarn needle and scissors.

And how about trying different colours too… there are endless possibilities and I’d love to see them all!

Once made, the coasters will certainly benefit from a little blocking and if you’re using cotton yarns they respond particularly well to this… wet them a little and then pin them out.

Here goes… ENJOY! πŸ™‚πŸ’™

Octagon Coaster

So that’s Day 1… a simple but effective pattern which makes a perfectly shaped little octagon coaster. Happy Crocheting Everyone and till tomorrow! πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

  1. Lovely to watch the sunset over the sea, I’m envious! Having just finished the original summer sunsets blanket it was perfect for me. I shall go and find my cotton colours for some coasters. Thank you Eleanor xx

  2. I’m still in the middle of my late summer sunsets blanket but I will make a little room for these coasters, they look lovely. Thank you for sharing the design.

  3. Doing a nautical theme in my living room so these are perfect , thank you for sharing your creations.

  4. Hi everyone. I will make mine later today and look forward to it. I always like to purchase a pattern and paid and downloaded the pattern from Etsy in the early hours, only to find it was cheaper on Ravelry! Never mind, will know next time to compare first

  5. Thank you for clarifying that Eleanor and thanks also for the link for the yarn organisers πŸ™‚

  6. Glad to see you or should I say hear from you. Hope you and family have been safe through this COVID NIGHTMARE

  7. Hi Ele, I love an idea to do CAL which will take much less then a blanket! 😊I can take part in this one! Thank you! Sending hugs πŸ€—

  8. Just finished the first coaster & loved it, thank you πŸ™‚ With a first grandchild on the way & partner just out of hospital, this little coaster was just the thing to take my mind off things. Thank you so much, Eleanora 😊

  9. Hi. I purchased the Scheepjes yarn to make my coasters and was so thrilled with it, the beautiful colours and the softness of the yarn, Unfortunately, I didn’t enjoy working with it. It must have taken me three times longer, at least, than it should have done to make one coaster. I found the yarn to be so loosely woven that it kept separating and therefore the stitches kept splitting so I was constantly making a stitch and unpicking it again. I would never work with this yarn again. Has anybody else had this problem or is it just me? Maybe it is the angle at which I hold my hook but I have not had the problem with acrylic yarns. I had planned to make a number of sets but not sure if this will happen now, not with this yarn anyway πŸ™

    1. Morning Marilyn… I hope you’ll persevere… I was first introduced to Scheepjes Cahlista back in 2017 when Simply Crochet magazine sent me a batch to design my Tunisian crochet cross stitch cushion (one of my favourite designs)… I remember it splitting at first but I found that as the cushion progressed and my hands and hook became more used to the new yarn (because as you say it is very different to any acrylics) the splitting became less and less and it’s now one of my favourite yarns giving a really lovely smooth finish… πŸ™‚πŸ’™ https://coastalcrochet.com/2018/01/24/front-cover-news-tunisian-crochet-and-cross-stitch-cushion/

  10. Hi Eleanor. Thank you for your words of encouragement. I don’t give up easily and will make the whole set of five. I have just finished the second one, the circular sunset and I have taken a picture of yesterday’s effort and today’s and hope to post on Facebook later. I have to say that it took me just as long as the first though. For every two stitches I created, I probably pulled back two. Anyway they are both finished with ends weaved in but not yet blocked. I will do that to the set when I finally get around to blocking my blanket !! πŸ™‚

  11. Hi Eleonora. Sorry, just noticed I seem to keep spelling your name incorrectly, with an ‘a’ instead of an ‘o’. Thank you for your kind words. I just posted my latest pic of the starfish and noticed that the top arm doesn’t look central with the top point. I don’t understand as I followed the pattern but it could be the way I stretched it into shape (as it hasn’t yet been blocked) prior to taking the pic. I will have to look at that πŸ™‚
