Beachcombing Blanket – Week 3

Welcome to Week 3 of my ‘Beachcombing Blanket’! I’m particularly fond of this weeks square and I really enjoyed the design process working with these colours and creating the shapes and textures! 🙂

Before we get started, here’s another video I managed to record for you… it was low tide and the sea was exceptionally calm… there are rock pools to see too… enjoy! 🙂

Ravelry Pattern for Beachcombing Blanket

This weeks square is inspired by man made beachcombing finds… (spot Salty!)

Those fishing nets, buoys and the occasional life ring that gets washed up onto our shores. They are always so bright in colour and can be easily spotted from a distance. It’s often after stormy weather that the seas bring these to land…

We’ve lived in our coastal home for 9 years and over those years we have found many buoys washed up onto shore. And somehow whenever I find one I just can’t resist taking it home!!

So we now have quite a collection decorating our garden…

We had a garden sort out recently and just look at 9 years worth of beachcombing buoy discoveries piled up!!

They come in so many different shapes and sizes… here’s an enormous buoy that we found a few years ago! 🙂

It’s not just the buoys but fishing nets too provide the bright pops of colour…

Of course these man made finds shouldn’t really be in the sea in the first place… I love this book ‘Beachcombing and the Standline’ and inside the authors state that “the fishing industry is one or the most prolific sources of marine litter”…

It’s certainly something we find a lot of amongst the general litter and plastics too. Here’s Salty with a plastic bottle she found…

We even found half an ice cream sign once…

Which brings me onto the ‘two minute beach clean’ which can be a wonderful beachcombing activity… 🙂 Do it with an organised group or do it alone, but spending just two minutes removing litter each time you visit the beach can really make such a difference! There’s a hashtag #2minutebeachclean on Instagram in which people share their finds. It’s amazing! There’s lots more information about it here too…

We have found a couple of life rings over the years. Not sure how these end up in the sea… have they saved someone’s life or have they been thrown in by people being reckless, risking life rings not being available when really needed? These that we found were very damaged and couldn’t be used again…

The life ring has certainly become a symbol of all things nautical and it forms the centre of our square this week… 🙂

And I’d just like to share a couple of photos from my daily exercise earlier this week. It was high tide so no beachcombing but what a view and such clear waters showing an array of blues and greens…

PATTERN IN UK CROCHET TERMINOLOGY.

Abbreviations

ch: chain

ch-sp(s): chain space(s)

dc: double crochet

dtr: double treble

htr: half treble

mm: millimetres

RdtrF2tog: Raised double treble front two stitches together (see below)

RS: right side

RtrF: Raised treble front (see below)

RtrtrF: Raised triple treble front (see below)

ss: slip stitch

st(s): stitch(es)

WS: wrong side

yoh: yarn over hook

Bobble: Complete all the following in the same stitch: with contrasting colour yarn, *yarn over hook (yoh), insert hook into st, yoh, pull contrasting yarn through to front, yoh, pull through 2 loops, repeat from * 4 times more (you should now have 5 contrasting colour loops and 1 main colour loop on hook), pull main colour yarn through all the loops on the hook (1 bobble made), continue with main colour, push bobble towards front of work, carry contrasting colour yarn along behind work and crochet next stitches around it to carry yarn along invisibly behind the work.

RdtrF2tog: Raised double treble front two stitches together: *complete a double treble st as normal but insert hook around the stem of the st inserting hook from right to left going from the front to the back and then round to the front again, stop at last yoh** when there are only 2 loops left on hook, repeat from * around stem of next st ending at ** (there should now be 3 loops left on the hook, yoh and pull through all the loops on hook.

RtrF: Raised treble Front: complete a treble st as normal but insert hook around the stem of the st inserting hook from right to left going from the front to the back and then round to the front again.

RtrtrF: Raised triple treble Front: complete a triple treble st as normal but insert hook around the stem of the st inserting hook from right to left going from the front to the back and then round to the front again.

Pattern Notes

It may help to put a stitch marker into the top of the starting/ turning chains at the beginning of each round or row making it easier to identify them as a stitch and the correct place to insert your hook at the end of the round or subsequent rows.

Week 3 – Buoys and Fishing Nets Square

This square is inspired by the fishing nets and buoys that are so often found, especially after stormy weather. You can see them from a distance by their bright, highly visible colours. Plus there’s the occasional life ring…

7 colours are used: Yarns C, D, E, F, G, H and I.

This square is made with the right side (RS) facing at all times.

MAKE TWO OF THESE SQUARES.

Here’s a tutorial for Rounds 1 – 3.

Using Yarn H, make 4ch, ss to first ch to join into a ring.

Round 1 (RS) 3ch (counts as first tr here and throughout), 11tr into the ring, ss to top of first 3 ch to join, fasten off. [12 sts]

Round 2 Join Yarn G to any st, 3ch, 1tr into same st at base of 3 ch, 2tr in each st to end, ss to top of first 3 ch, fasten off. [24 sts]

Round 3 Join Yarn C to any st, 3ch (counts as 1 dc and 2 ch), miss next st, 1dc in next st, * 2ch, miss next 2 sts working 1dc spike st in tr from Round 1 directly below second missed st, ** (2ch, miss next st, 1dc in next st) two times, repeat from * three times ending final repeat at **, 2ch, miss final st, ss to first ch of beginning 3 ch, fasten off. [12 x 2-ch-sps with 4 spike sts]

Here’s a tutorial for Rounds 4 – 6.

Round 4 Join Yarn H into any 2-ch-sp, 2ch (counts as first htr), 2htr in same 2-ch-sp, (miss next st, 3htr in next 2-ch-sp) to end, miss final st, ss to top of first 2 ch, do not fasten off. [36 sts]

In Rounds 5, 6 and 7 insert hook into the back 2 loops of the htr sts, leaving a front strand/loop to the front of the work.

Round 5 2ch, 1htr into same st at base of 2 ch, 1htr in each of next 2 sts, (2htr in next st, 1htr in each of next 2 sts) to end, ss to top of first 2 ch, fasten off. [48 sts]

Round 6 Join Yarn C to back 2 loops of any st, 2ch, 1htr into same st at base of 2 ch, 1htr in each of next 3 sts, (2htr in next st, 1htr in each of next 3 sts) to end, ss to top of first 2 ch, fasten off. [60 sts]

Here’s a tutorial for Rounds 7 – 8.

Round 7 Join Yarn E to back 2 loops of any st, 1ch (counts as first dc), 1dc in next st, miss next 3 sts working (1RtrF, 2ch, 1RtrF) all around the same htr st from Round 5 which is directly below the central st of the 3 missed sts, *1dc in each of next 2 sts, miss next 3 sts working (1RtrF, 2ch, 1RtrF) all around the same htr st below from Round 5 (leaving 3 htr stitches in Round 5 between previous raised st and this one), repeat from * to end, ss to first ch, fasten off.[12 x groups of raised sts]

Round 8 Join Yarn C to any 2-ch-sp in-between raised sts, 3ch, 3tr in same ch-sp, miss next st, 1tr in each of next 2 sts, miss next st, *4tr in next 2-ch-sp, miss next st, 1tr in each of next 2 sts, miss next st, repeat from * to end, ss to top of first 3 ch, fasten off. [72 sts]

Here’s a tutorial for Rounds 9 – 10.

Round 9 Join Yarn E to left st of any 4 tr group, 1ch (counts as first dc), 1dc in each of next 4 sts, miss next st working RdtrF2tog around both the first and second raised sts below from Round 7, *1dc in each of next 5 sts, miss next st working RdtrF2tog around both the first and second raised sts below from Round 7, repeat from * to end, ss to first ch, fasten off. [12 x groups of raised sts]

Round 10 With the orange ‘life ring’ facing upright and imagining a square around it, join Yarn I to central dc of any 5 dc group which is above a spike st from Round 3 (this will be the first corner), 4ch (counts as first dtr), (1dtr, 2ch, 2dtr) in same st, *1dtr in each of next 2 sts, 1tr in each of next 2 sts, 1htr in each of next 2 sts, 1dc in each of next 5 sts, 1htr in next 2 sts, 1tr in next 2 sts, 1dtr in next 2 sts, **(2dtr, 2ch, 2dtr) all in next st, repeat from * three times ending final repeat at **, ss to top of first 4 ch, fasten off. [21 sts on each side with 4 x corner 2-ch-sps]

Here’s a tutorial for Rounds 11 -13.

Round 11 Join Yarn F to any corner ch-sp, 3ch, (1tr, 2ch, 2tr) in same corner ch-sp, 1tr in each st to end of side, *(2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in corner ch-sp, 1tr in each st to end of side, repeat from * two times, ss to top of first 3 ch, fasten off. [25 sts on each side with 4 x corner 2-ch-sps]

Round 12 Join Yarn D to any corner ch-sp, 3ch (counts as 1 dc and 2 ch), 1dc in same corner ch-sp, *1dc in each of next 2 sts, 1 bobble with Yarn G in next st, (1dc in each of next 4 sts, 1 bobble with Yarn G in next st) four times, 1dc in next 2 sts, **(1dc, 2ch, 1dc) in corner ch-sp, repeat from * three times ending final repeat at **, ss to first ch of beginning 3 ch, do not fasten off. Here’s a tutorial for Rounds 14 – 16.

In Round 14 insert hook into the back 2 loops of the htr sts, leaving a front strand/loop to the front of the work.

Pay attention to crochet into the first htr stitch of each side which is less clear when crocheting into a round of half treble stitches.

Round 14 Join Yarn H to any corner ch-sp, 3ch, (1tr, 2ch, 2tr) in same corner ch-sp, 1tr in each st to end of side, *(2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in corner ch-sp, 1tr in each st to end of side, repeat from * two times, ss to top of first 3 ch, do not fasten off. [33 sts on each side with 4 x corner 2-ch-sps]
