Beachcombing Blanket – Week 3

Welcome to Week 3 of my ‘Beachcombing Blanket’! I’m particularly fond of this weeks square and I really enjoyed the design process working with these colours and creating the shapes and textures! 🙂

Before we get started, here’s another video I managed to record for you… it was low tide and the sea was exceptionally calm… there are rock pools to see too… enjoy! 🙂

And here’s the weekly round-up of just some of the blanket squares being shared over on Instagram and in the Facebook Group… 😍

I love them all! 😍 Do have a look through on either Instagram or Facebook… there are beautiful photos being shared! Also, following on from the world map I posted last week, lots of people have shared where they’re from in the Facebook Group, on Instagram or here on my blog and amazingly we have people crocheting along in over 40 countries!! 🙂 🙂

I’ve actually run out of pins to put on my map!! It really is so very very special and I’m in awe of how social media has enabled me to get my designs out to people all over the world… and for you to all connect and crochet along together! 🙂

For those of you who have purchased the PDF pattern on Ravelry it has now been updated to include Week 3 in both UK and US terms…

Ravelry Pattern for Beachcombing Blanket

This weeks square is inspired by man made beachcombing finds… (spot Salty!)

Those fishing nets, buoys and the occasional life ring that gets washed up onto our shores. They are always so bright in colour and can be easily spotted from a distance. It’s often after stormy weather that the seas bring these to land…

We’ve lived in our coastal home for 9 years and over those years we have found many buoys washed up onto shore. And somehow whenever I find one I just can’t resist taking it home!!

So we now have quite a collection decorating our garden…

We had a garden sort out recently and just look at 9 years worth of beachcombing buoy discoveries piled up!!

They come in so many different shapes and sizes… here’s an enormous buoy that we found a few years ago! 🙂

It’s not just the buoys but fishing nets too provide the bright pops of colour…

Of course these man made finds shouldn’t really be in the sea in the first place… I love this book ‘Beachcombing and the Standline’ and inside the authors state that “the fishing industry is one or the most prolific sources of marine litter”…

It’s certainly something we find a lot of amongst the general litter and plastics too. Here’s Salty with a plastic bottle she found…

We even found half an ice cream sign once…

Which brings me onto the ‘two minute beach clean’ which can be a wonderful beachcombing activity… 🙂 Do it with an organised group or do it alone, but spending just two minutes removing litter each time you visit the beach can really make such a difference! There’s a hashtag #2minutebeachclean on Instagram in which people share their finds. It’s amazing! There’s lots more information about it here too…

www.beachclean.net

We have found a couple of life rings over the years. Not sure how these end up in the sea… have they saved someone’s life or have they been thrown in by people being reckless, risking life rings not being available when really needed? These that we found were very damaged and couldn’t be used again…

The life ring has certainly become a symbol of all things nautical and it forms the centre of our square this week… 🙂

And I’d just like to share a couple of photos from my daily exercise earlier this week. It was high tide so no beachcombing but what a view and such clear waters showing an array of blues and greens…

So let’s get crocheting! 🙂

The full written pattern with lots of photos and links to YouTube tutorials is below in UK crochet terms. At the very end of this blog post I’ve provided the pattern in US terms too.

  1. I had such fun doing the first 3 squares. Luckily the lady in the wool shop will be there for a few hours today so that I can get more wool. My fingers are itching to start on week 3.

  2. Ooh. Loved the rock pool and beachcombing finds video – and this square is gorgeous. I’m so looking forward to making it. Thank you Eleonora xx

  3. Enjoyed the soft lapping of the sea and the rock pools are amazing. Really enjoying the blanket but still on week 1 as I managed to shut my finger in the car door so it has halted what I can do, Thank you for sharing Eleonora

  4. A wonderfully rich and inspiring post. I really enjoyed your video, such a beautifully calm sea. I do miss beachcombing! But I am also aware how lucky I am to have my garden and plenty of crochet projects on the go to keep me happy until my beachcombing days return.

  8. Hi there, Caz suggested I visit you, I’m glad she did! I love the ocean, crocheting and beach finds. Have you ever found Japanese glass fishing floats? I have a large collection of them here in Oregon, USA. If you google – teresa kasner japanese fishing floats – you might enjoy seeing them. I’ve also crocheted over rocks and you can google the same to see them. Your crochet is spectacular!! Teresa 🙂

  9. So missing our lovely beach here in Lowestoft and your blanket was the perfect antidote!
Reading your blog as well brings the joy of living on the coast right into my living room.
    Thanks so much for sharing..xx

  10. Hi as I joined late is it possible to send me the emails for weeks 1 and 2?Many thanksFleeSent from Samsung tablet.

    1. Hi Tracey… Don’t worry… there’s always going to be variations in size as the squares use different stitches and tension can change… The important thing is to make sure there are 51 stitches on each side at the end and then when they’re joined they’ll come together well… hope that helps! 😊💙💙
