Winter Walk Scarf Day 11 – You won’t fit that Driftwood in the Car!

Welcome to Day 11 of my Winter Walk Scarf! It’s our penultimate day and as we think about heading home, today we realise that ‘you won’t fit that driftwood in the car’!! 😄

Driftwood is so beautiful and yes, we’ve found some huge pieces in the past as we’ve walked along the beach that we’ve been so temped to take home! But it can be oh so heavy! Driftwood can be used in so many wonderfully creative ways and one of my first published crochet designs incorporated a smaller piece of beautiful driftwood (that wasn’t too heavy to take home 😄!)…

But driftwood does provide a habitat for a variety of sea creatures so do check before you take any pieces home that there’s nothing living in or under the wood. The larger pieces provide a new home for beach dwelling creatures too… and of course it can become a welcome permanent feature on many beaches!

This photo was taken in Corfu back in 2019 – we stayed near this stunning beach and saw many people come and go and use this driftwood as a little seat… I wonder if it’s still there now?!

Last year, during my ‘Picnic on the Beach Blanket‘ crochet-along I found this heart shaped piece whilst making videos to accompany the crochet-along… and yes, this piece did come home with us!

So our crochet stitches today, with long chains between the stitches, resemble the big pieces of driftwood we might come across on our winter walk! It’s an easy going repetitive stitch pattern that provides a lovely drape, just perfect in our scarves…

And yet again, I’ve absolutely loved looking through all your progress photos… I’m amazed each day at the variety of scarves being crocheted! 😍 And today we have some guests… four legged friends appear, as well as willing models! 😁😍

The first grid is from photos shared over on Instagram and the second grid is from photos shared in the Facebook Group

The scarves are getting long aren’t they!? It will of course depend on the yarn you’ve used, hook size and then good old tension that can be so hugely different between people. And we will be adding a side edging to neaten the sides, so don’t worry if yours are a little wobbly! 😄

As a reminder, my original scarf using 4 ply yarn measures approximately 210cm x 20cm (83in x 8in). And my DK version measures approximately 250cm x 28cm (98in x 11in). The DK version is particularly big but oh so cosy when wrapped around a couple of times…

For those of you who have purchased the printer friendly pattern on Ravelry it has now been updated to include Day 11:  https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/winter-walk-scarf

And thanks as always to Kirstyn from ‘Miss Moffatt Yarns’ who provided all the inspiration I needed for this scarf through her beautiful yarns… 😍

Happy Crocheting… and I look forward to sharing the grand finale with you tomorrow! If you’ve got this far, then thank you so much for reading… 💙💙💙
