Coastal Coasters CAL… Day 1

Welcome to Day 1 of my mini crochet along (CAL) – it’s the ‘Coastal Crochet Coasters CAL‘! 😊

As the nights draw in, the days get shorter and the weather turns unsettled here on the south coast, this sunset yesterday evening was particularly special, and the perfect opportunity to capture these coasters in action! 😍🍷

I even managed to record a little introductory video… enjoy! 🙂

So, over the next five days I’ll share one coaster pattern with you all each day… 🙂 I do love a crocheted coaster and they make such fabulous gifts, especially for popping into an envelope with a card and posting off to loved ones (thinking ahead to Christmas time!) 🙂

Make one of each coaster over the next five days or maybe make more than one each day and create a set of each design… it’s entirely up to you! Mix and match and have fun!

The patterns will be posted each day here on my blog.

But if you prefer a digital printer friendly download then the full pattern for all five coasters in both UK and US crochet terminology is available to purchase now in both my Ravelry and Etsy stores. Here are the links…

The lovely thing about a crochet along is that people from all over the world are all crocheting the same thing at around the same time. It’s so wonderful to be able to see what others are up to and share progress photos with each other. You can do that in the Facebook Group ‘Coastal Crochet’ or use the hashtag #coastalcrochetcoasters over on Instagram… 🙂

I can’t wait to see all your coasters! 😍

Each coaster design is different and each coaster is created based on a different shape… today we start with an Octagon!

You will need:

For the coasters pictured I used ‘Scheepjes Cahlista’ which is an aran weight cotton yarn but of course you can experiment with a variety of yarns. These coasters make great stash busting projects as only a little yarn is needed for each coaster.

I used Scheepjes Cahlista (100% cotton, 50g/85m), 1 ball in each of the following colours:

Yarn A Crystalline (385),

Yarn B Rich Coral (410),

Yarn C Vivid Blue (146),

Yarn D Lemonade (403),

Yarn E Cyan (397),

Yarn F Snow White (106)

If you’re using 6 colours like me, it’s a good idea to organise and label your yarn colours…

You’ll also need a 3.5mm hook (or hook size to suit your tension), yarn needle and scissors.

And how about trying different colours too… there are endless possibilities and I’d love to see them all!

Once made, the coasters will certainly benefit from a little blocking and if you’re using cotton yarns they respond particularly well to this… wet them a little and then pin them out.

Here goes… ENJOY! 🙂💙
