I’m going to be hosting a mini ‘coasters’ crochet along (CAL) at the end of October… and in this blog post you’ll find all the information you need if you’d like to join in! 😊💙
These coasters are of course coastal inspired and each one is based on a different shape. An octagon, circle, pentagon, square and hexagon… they’re all there! 😄
Here’s how the idea came about…
Throughout September I’ve been taking part in the ‘Yarn Friends Rock’ challenge over on Instagram. Posting a photo each day based on a daily prompt hosted by fellow crochet designers…

One of the prompts earlier this week was for ‘never ending WIP’ (work in progress). Well that really got me thinking…
Back in April, together with Sandra who writes the blog Wild Daffodil, I was due to host a workshop in Dorset for these ‘Coastal Crochet Coasters’. Sadly, like so many things in these difficult times of a worldwide pandemic, it had to be cancelled…🙁
So these coasters have since become my ‘never ending WIP’ because they were designed about a year ago and although I have some finished samples, after the workshop was cancelled, I didn’t get around to finalising the patterns and I have yet to get them out there for people to enjoy. So that’s what gave me the idea to release the patterns for these coasters as a mini CAL!
It will be called: ‘Coastal Crochet Coasters CAL’.
A mini CAL in which I’ll share one coaster pattern per day over a five day period from Friday 23rd – Tuesday 27th October!

Patterns:
The patterns will be posted here on my blog in five daily blog posts beginning on Friday 23rd October 2020… absolutely anyone is very welcome to join in.
I’ll have a printer friendly PDF with all five patterns in one document available to purchase at the start of the CAL over in my Ravelry and Etsy stores too.
They will be written patterns and I’ll have lots of step by step photos here on my blog. There won’t be any videos or charts for these patterns I’m afraid. They are simple patterns so achievable for beginners too. 🙂
Yarns:
For my five coasters pictured I used Scheepjes Cahlista. It’s an Aran weight cotton yarn and I used a 3.5mm hook to give the coasters a firm finish. So if you want your coasters to look exactly like mine here’s what you need to get ready:
Scheepjes Cahlista (100% cotton, 50g/85m), 1 ball in each of the following colours:
Crystalline (385),
Rich Coral (410)
Vivid Blue (146)
Lemonade (403)
Cyan (397)
Snow White (106).
A 3.5mm hook (or hook size to suit your tension)
You can of course use any yarns you like for this CAL. These coasters are small crochet projects and therefore only use up a little bit of yarn so they are great for using up left overs… they’re perfect stash busters!
You can use DK weight yarn and even 4ply with the 3.5mm hook. The coasters will come up smaller but they will still be a good size for a coaster. Mine measure approximately 10cm across. 🙂
I do love a crocheted coaster! They are quick little projects and everyone needs a coaster somewhere in the house don’t they?! They also make perfect gifts, especially at Christmas time when they slip into an envelope with ease, in with the Christmas card!
So maybe, with the timing of this Coasters CAL, you’ll be able to crochet lots for Christmas gifts this year!
