Welcome to Week 8 of my ‘Beachcombing Blanket’ crochet along. This week it’s all about waves! 😊🌊🌊🌊
I’ve recorded this video which I’ve called ‘A Week of Waves‘ in celebration of those waves that roll up onto our shores… enjoy!
There are different ways that waves can be created in crochet… 🌊
Using stitches of differing heights across a row to create the waves is one way and I have used this in my previous designs. Here it is in my Seaside Stash Busting Blanket…
A chart can also be used to create a picture of waves as in my Waves Cushion which I designed for Simply Crochet magazine…
But this time, for our ‘Beachcombing Blanket‘, by crocheting stitches together and then pushing stitches apart with chain spaces in-between, and alternating this across the row, waves are created… and these are ‘Puff Stitch Waves‘! 🌊
A beachcombing blanket just wouldn’t be complete without some waves in there somewhere! And these Puff Stitch Waves give so much fabulous texture. They are a joy to crochet. Once you get into the stitch pattern, it’s the kind of repetitive crochet that is so soothing and relaxing… 🙂 🌊

It’s been such warm, dry and sunny summer weather all week! Looking back at these photos I can see there’s only been blue skies with no rain in sight. It can get pretty hot on the beach with no shade for Salty. Here she is on my blanket in progress… luckily she has the water to cool off in! 😊💙🌊

PATTERN IN UK CROCHET TERMINOLOGY.
Abbreviations
ch: chain
ch-sp(s): chain space(s)
dc: double crochet
htr: half treble
htr3tog: half treble 3 stitches together (puff stitch – see below)
mm: millimetres
RS: right side
ss: slip stitch
st(s): stitch(es)
tr: treble
tr2tog: treble 2 stitches together
WS: wrong side
yoh: yarn over hook
Puff stitch: this is the same as htr3tog: (yoh, insert hook into st, yoh, pull up a loop) 3 times, yoh, pull through all the loops on the hook.
Week 8 – Puff Stitch Waves

These are Puff Stitch Waves and are inspired of course by all those waves which roll into shore!
3 colours are used: Yarns D, B and E.
Pattern Notes
The top and bottom panels will continue to be crocheted. Row 5 continues on from the end of Row 4 from Week 7 when we joined with Yarn D at the end of the final st. When joining a new colour do so at the final yoh of the final st of the row as indicated. Fasten off the previous colour used and continue onto next row with new colour. Htr3tog is the same as a puff stitch – see abbreviations.

Row 5 (RS) 3ch (counts as first tr), 1tr in next st, (tr2tog over next 2 sts) two times, * (1ch, htr3tog in next st) five times, 1ch, (tr2tog over next 2 sts) six times, repeat from * nine times, (1ch, htr3tog in next st) five times, 1ch, (tr2tog over next 2 sts) three times, turn.
Row 6 (WS) 1ch (does not count as st), 1dc in first st and each of next 2 sts, * (1dc in next 1-ch-sp, 1dc in top of next puff st) five times, 1dc in next 1-ch-sp, 1dc in each of next 6 sts, repeat from * nine times, (1dc in next 1-ch-sp, 1dc in top of next puff st) five times, 1dc in next 1-ch-sp, 1dc in each of next 3 sts, join with Yarn B at end of third st, miss final st (do not crochet into the top of the 3 ch), turn. [187 sts]
Rows 7 – 8 Repeat Rows 5 and 6 joining with Yarn E at end of Row 8
Rows 9 – 10 Repeat Rows 5 and 6 joining with Yarn I at end of Row 10
Repeat all rows on opposite end of blanket.
Weave in all ends.
