Book Review – The Woolly Prawn…

Back in September I was lucky to meet fellow crochet designer, blogger and yarn friend Jenny who writes the blog Prawn and Pebble. We chatted all things yarn related (and a little more) over a nice drink! 🙂

Jenny then sent me a copy of a book she published, together with her daughter, back in 2012 and as I haven’t done a book review on my blog before I thought it would be nice to do one…

So here’s my review of:

‘The Woolly Prawn’ by Sian Goulding and Jenny Every.

Published in 2012.

Its currently available with 50% off in their Etsy shop… www.etsy.com/uk/shop/TheWoollyPrawn

The first thing that struck me about the book is that the little prawn cover star is photographed in front of Brighton Pier! That’s very close to where I live…

I live just outside of Brighton on the south east coast of England so recognised the pier instantly and thought it would be fun to photograph the book in the same position! So earlier this week I did just that and here are the results…

A little more sea can be seen in my photos… but the pier has hardly changed!

The cloudscape above the sea was really stunning that day…

And I really enjoyed strolling along the seafront…

So that was a very special start to my book review! 🙂

The book itself is really fun. I love the way it’s written in a friendly style and to highlight the fun element, a pattern for a headband is photographed on a water melon! 🙂

In total there are 7 knitting patterns, 5 crochet patterns and 4 pattens that combine both knitting and crochet…

As well as the 16 patterns which includes the prawn, there are additional pages which write about Hyperbolic Crochet, Knitting for Charity, Knitting as Therapy and Knitting as Art. So it’s more than just a pattern book, it’s actually a really interesting read too…

I love the way the patterns are not prescriptive. There are suggestions for yarn to use if you want to follow the pattern exact but the way it’s written really encourages the reader to try different yarns and to experiment with colours. It’s quite liberating for a pattern book.

There is a wide variety of patterns and the chapters are separated into categories…

Some of the patterns I would not make – there’s a golf club cover and the only person who plays golf that I know is my brother… I’m not sure he’d appreciate a knitted cover for his clubs although it’s a lovely fun idea! 🙂

I think my favourite pattern is for a crocheted cushion cover…

And I really love the crocheted dog coat too…

I love a pattern book! There are so many patterns available online but I still love to hold a book or magazine in my hands… and this is certainly a nice one!

It’s available for only £4.99 which is 50% off the original price…

Happy Crocheting Everyone… 🙂 🙂

  1. That looks a cute book – and for me too, Brighton in the pics is an added bonus (I was born and brought up in Hastings just along the coast, a day or evening out in Brighton as a teenager was fab!). You have tempted me to pop over to Etsy now !
