This week we start with rounds inspired by seaweed with double treble (US treble) stitches that reach down to rounds below resembling the long leaves of this marine plant floating in the sea. Seaweed is something that the tides regularly bring onto our beaches. We often think of seaweed as green but it comes in a variety of colours…
Here’s a reminder of the abbreviations in UK Crochet Terminology. US terms are at the bottom of this blog post.
ch: chain, ch-sp(s): chain space(s), dc: double crochet, dtr: double treble, htr: half treble, RS: right side, RdcF: rasied double crochet front (see below), ss: slip stitch, st(s): stitch(es), tr: treble, WS: wrong side
RdcF: Raised double crochet Front: complete a double crochet st as normal but insert hook around the stem of the st inserting hook from right to left going from the front to the back and then round to the front again.
There’s a YouTube tutorial to help with Round 16… if you watch the beginning I show you clearly which is the first and last stitch to crochet into after the corner chain space as it isn’t always clear after a round of half treble (US half double crochet) stitches…
To Work
Round 16 (RS) Join Yarn G to any corner ch-sp, 3ch (counts as 1 dc and 2 ch), 1dc in same corner ch-sp, * 1dc in next 3 sts, 1dtr in dc st below from Round 14, (miss st directly behind dtr, 1dc in next 3 sts, 1dtr in dc st below from Round 14 which sits above dtr cluster) and repeat to final dtr cluster on this side, 1dc in next 3 sts, 1dtr in dc st below from Round 14, 1dc in final 3 sts, (1dc, 2ch, 1dc) in corner ch-sp, repeat from * on next three sides ending with ss to first ch, turn [10 dtr on each side]
Round 17 2ch, 1htr in each st around working (1htr, 2ch, 1htr) in each corner ch-sp, ss to top of first 2 ch, turn [47 sts on each side]
Round 18 (RS) 4ch (counts as 1 tr and 1 ch), * miss 1 st, (1tr, 2ch, 1tr) in corner ch-sp, continue with (1ch, miss 1 st, 1tr in next st) to end of side, 1ch, repeat from * on next three sides ending with 1ch, miss final st, ss to 3rd ch from first 4 ch, do not fasten off (place a st marker in loop to secure whilst you remove hook ready to work on Round 19), do not turn [24 x 1-ch-sps on each side and 4 x corner 2-ch-sps]
And now we have more inspiration from the white sea foam on the waves as it brings the seaweed into shore…
Round 19 is a repeat of Round 6 and remember there was the YouTube tutorial if that helps…
Round 19 With RS of work facing, join Yarn C to front loop of any htr st from Round 17, 2ch, 2htr in same place, 1ss in next front loop, continue with (3htr in next front loop, 1ss in next front loop) around to end, ss to top of first 2 ch, fasten off
Round 20 Re-join hook to loop from end of Round 18, now turn work so WS of work is facing, 1ch (counts as first dc), (1dc in next ch-sp, 1dc in next st) all around working (1dc, 2ch, 1dc) in each corner ch-sp, ss to first 1 ch, fasten off, turn [51 sts on each side]
We now move onto some rounds of long wave stitch which were a big feature in my ‘Seaside Stash Busting Blanket’ from last year! A coastal inspired blanket just has to have waves in there somewhere… 🙂
Round 21 (RS) Join Yarn B to any corner ch-sp, 3ch, (1tr, 2ch, 2tr) in same corner ch-sp, * 1tr in next st, 1htr in next 2 sts, 1dc in next 3 sts, continue with (2htr, 2tr, 3dtr, 2tr, 2htr, 3dc) and repeat to end of side (the finishing st will be 1tr), (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in corner ch-sp, repeat from * on next three sides ending with ss to top of first 3 ch, fasten off, turn [55 sts on each side]
Round 22 (WS) Join Yarn C to any corner ch-sp, 1ch (counts as 1 dc), 2dc in same corner ch-sp, continue with 1dc in each st around working 3dc in each corner ch-sp, ss to first ch, fasten off, turn
Round 23 (RS) Join Yarn E to central dc on any corner, 4ch (counts as 1 htr and 2 ch), 1htr in same st, * 1htr in next 4 sts, 1tr in next 2 sts, 1dtr in next 3 sts, continue with (2tr, 2htr, 3dc, 2htr, 2tr, 3dtr) and repeat two times, 1tr in next 2 sts, 1htr in next 4 sts, (1htr, 2ch, 1htr) in central corner st, repeat from * on next three sides side ending with ss to 2nd ch of first 4 ch, turn [59 sts on each side]
Round 24 1ch (counts as first dc), 1dc in each st around working (1dc, 2ch, 1dc) in each corner ch-sp, ss to first ch, fasten off, turn [61 sts on each side]
Round 25 (RS) Join Yarn A to any corner ch-sp, 5ch (counts as 1 tr and 2 ch), 1tr in same corner ch-sp, continue with * (1ch, miss 1 st, 1tr in next st) to end of side, 1ch, miss final st, (1tr, 2ch, 1tr) in corner ch-sp, repeat from * on next three sides ending with ss to 3rd ch of first 5 ch, turn [31 x 1-ch-sps on each side and 4 x corner 2-ch-sps]
Round 26 1ss in next ch-sp, 3ch (counts as first tr), 1tr in same ch-sp, continue with 2tr in each ch-sp around working (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in each corner ch-sp, ss to top of first 3 ch (after final corner ch-sp), fasten off , turn [66 sts on each]

Round 27 With RS of work facing, join Yarn C to 11th tr st in from any left outer edge of Round 25 going around the post of the st from right to left, 4ch (counts as 1 dc and 3 ch), 1RdcF around same st, *2ch, 1RdcF around next st to the left, 3ch, 1RdcF around same st, repeat from * to end of side and continue to 11th st along on next side, fasten off. Repeat from start of Round 27 for remaining three corners.
And finally for this week we have rounds inspired by groynes. These man made structures interrupt the natural action of the tides and prevent some of our beaches from being washed away…
Round 28 (RS) Join Yarn D to any corner ch-sp, 3ch (counts as 1 dc and 2 ch), 1dc in same corner ch-sp, continue with (2ch, miss 2 sts, 1dc in space in-between sts) and repeat all around working (1dc, 2ch, 1dc) in each corner ch-sp, ss to first ch, fasten off, turn [34 dc sts on each side]
Round 29 (WS) Join Yarn A to any corner ch-sp, 3ch, (1tr, 2ch, 2tr) in same corner ch-sp, continue with 2tr in each 2-ch-sp around working (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in each corner ch-sp, ss to top of first 3 ch, fasten off, turn [35 groups of 2tr on each side]
Round 30 (RS) Join Yarn E to any corner ch-sp, 4ch (counts as first htr st and 2 ch), 1htr in same corner ch-sp, continue with 1htr in each st around working (1htr, 2ch, 1htr) in each corner ch-sp, ss to second of first 4 ch, fasten off, turn [72 sts on each side]

I’m wanting to make this lovely blanket but I can’t find a list of the colours you are using. I’m wanting to use Stylecraft special DK but don’t need to buy the whole “kit” from Knitting network as I already had several colours which look like they are those you are using). I have Saffron, meadow, silver, cream, cloud blue (wasn’t entirely sure if this was the light blue you’re using but it looked the nearest when trying to guess) and storm blue. I’m struggling to identify the other blue(I guessed cornish blue but when it arrived it didn’t look like the brighter/darker blue in your pictures). Are you able to give a list of the colours you’ve used for this please to avoid me making any more mistakes when trying to order the missing colours?

Hi Eleonora, just wanted to say how helpful I have been finding the tutorials you have done and the detailed pictures too. As a relative beginner it is often so difficult to know which loop is which. Even on what might look a simple round at the beginning of week 2, the tutorial for row 16 was so useful. You should see the wiggly edges of my seaside stashbusting blanket. So far on this lovely project, my changing tides square is looking good, I’m using cotton too! Thanks so much for the detailed instructions, really appreciated 🙂

Hi…late to the party as usual! I’ve purchased this kit from the Knitting network which comes with all the beautiful yarn and a printed pattern. Thank you for putting this together its wonderful. I have a question about the printed pattern..particularly rows 18 and 19…the written pattern doesn’t state that there is a colour change yet this online CAL states colour C. I’m wondering if the printed pattern has a typo or there has been a correction update on the written pattern….please help xxx
Hello Jacqueline… lovely that you’re enjoying it! In the written pattern it should say that Round 19 is a repeat of Round 6 so when you go back to read Round 6 that’s where it says to join yarn C. Hi Eleonora, I’m really late to this CAL!! During 2022 I made your Postcards design (which I thought might be beyond me as I could barely crochet) but I did succeed and I loved it so. I then went on to do the Beachcombing Blanket, Picnic on the Beach (Autumn), and Down by the Sea in the two colourways. I am in the middle of moving house and didn’t want to start any project. As things have stalled a bit 🙁 I was so tired of watching TV that I ordered the materials for Changing Tides today and purchased the pattern from Ravelry, I cannot wait for the yarn to arrive and get started; I had my 80th birthday last September and am so proud of these beautiful blankets and the new skill I now get so much pleasure from. The Postcards, Beachcombing and Picnic are for my three daughters and Down by the Sea were Christmas gifts for my sister and my best friend. We all live by the sea and just absolutely love your designs. Thank you for your wonderful tutorials they are so helpful and a treat to listen to as they have been a source of great calm since I had to restrict going out and about due to Covid and being in the vulnerable age bracket. Hi there! I seem to not have enough stitches on my stitch count! Do you have any tutorials where we could add a couple of rows where the stitches could be increased gradually (or how to do this?) I usually divide the amount of stitches I’m missing by 4 (the amount of sides) and then DC twice in the same stitch equally until the right amount of stitches are reached. Is there another way?
Hi there… the way you’re increasing is perfect! Or you could add 1 extra stitch into each corner so each side has 1 extra stitch. It’s the half treble stitches that are easy to miss sometimes…. Good luck! 😊😊
