So drilling holes in sea glass has been on my to-do-list for ages! And this weekend I finally got round to it… 🙂
Many of you know I love sea glass and I’ve written blog posts about it before…

Of course I love crocheting around sea glass but I’ve had plans to drill holes in it so that I can start using it in different ways.
My wonderful father has spent a lot of time researching the subject on my behalf and for my birthday last year he and my husband bought me the necessary equipment- of course a drill had to be first and he decided upon a hand held Proxxon. He has also got me various accessories including a stand and clamp as he wanted me to be safe – a face mask to protect against inhaling glass dust and goggles for eye protection in case of any splintering glass were a must! 🙂
So ready with all the necessary equipment, including diamond tipped drill bits, we gave it a go… but it’s not as easy as I thought it would be!!
As you can see from the photo above, we shattered quite a lot of pieces. Many people have kindly given advice and suggestions such as drilling in water, using a small drill bit first before using a bigger piece and also using masking tape. We tried various things but it was tricky. Until we did then succeed in drilling three pieces- yay!
And then a bit later, after quite a few more pieces cracked, I managed three more… 🙂
I’m pretty pleased to have six pieces successfully drilled!
So I will persevere and keep trying… it will be a while before I feel brave enough to try drilling into my nicer pieces of seaglass. But for now I’m really happy to have these pieces which I already have plans for…
I have wound the mini skeins of yarns which i got from Miss Moffat Yarns into little balls…
…and have started a project using ‘Large Shell Stitch’.
I will use the sea glass with this at some point and show you the end results soon! I’ve called this project my ‘part-time’ project as I only have time to dip into it every now and then…but when I do I love working those shell stitches! 🙂
Happy crocheting everyone… 🙂 🙂
What a gadget! I do love a good gadget.
Perserverance pays off. Looking forward to seeing what you do with your precious pieces..
Thank you so much Sandra! My Dad certainly did his research and I’m pleased with the drill… I can’t wait to use the pieces in my crochet! 😊💚💚
What a lovely Dad!
Awww… he certainly is!! 😊❤️❤️❤️
It will all come together beautifully.
Thank you so much- I hope so! 😊❤️
Drilling sea glass IS tough!!! I use a Dremel, but that upright unit you have is much smarter 👍
Oh it is tough!! The drill I have is very much like a dremel.. the upright unit you see is simply a stand to hold the drill in place… thank you so much and Good luck with yours! 😊❤️❤️
Ooh how lovely they are! As soon as I saw the first sentence about drilling the holes I wondered if you’d had a few blips before you got the hang of it. Thank you for sharing the shard pictures. We aren’t all perfect. we make the occasional mistake before a success. Maybe the shattering also depends on what the original item was before it was sea glass. I have used shells for things before and know how easily they can break when putting holes in them!
Thank you so much Tinaor… that’s a good point about what the glass was in its previous life… I hadn’t thought about that so thank you! This is definitely a case of learning from my mistakes!! 😊❤️❤️
I wonder whether using a ceramic tile drill bit might work. Beautiful glass 🙂
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that suggestion… I do think the issue is perhaps with the drill bits so I will give those you suggest a go… thank you again! 😊❤️❤️
I hope it works for you 🙂.
That’s an impressive bit of kit! I love the look of your shell crochet, such a prettty stitch and the colours are wonderful together.
I love the shell stitch too Cathy! And that kit was all my fathers doing- I wouldn’t have known where to begin! But at least I have now finally made a start! 🙂 🙂
oooh, I’m intrigued about the mix of crochet and sea glass! The drill looks fab! I want one! I don’t even know what for…
Ha ha!!That’s funny…it’s pretty powerful! 🙂 🙂 🙂 Thanks for stopping by…
I recently went to Lyme Regis and found some amazing pieces of glass along the sands……there is something magical about them ….the sharp edges rounded off and then holing tem up to the light……wonderful. I love what you have done with them!
Aww, thank you so much! It really is like finding treasure isn’t it… 🙂 🙂
Love the use of crochet embellishment of the glass pieces, looks great. I do so love the worn and weathered look of glass from the sea.
It’s wonderful isn’t it! Some of the pieces have been in the sea for decades! 🙂 🙂
