Drilling Holes in Sea Glass…

IMG_6031

So drilling holes in sea glass has been on my to-do-list for ages! And this weekend I finally got round to it… 🙂

Many of you know I love sea glass and I’ve written blog posts about it before…

Of course I love crocheting around sea glass but I’ve had plans to drill holes in it so that I can start using it in different ways.

My wonderful father has spent a lot of time researching the subject on my behalf and for my birthday last year he and my husband bought me the necessary equipment- of course a drill had to be first and he decided upon a hand held Proxxon. He has also got me various accessories including a stand and clamp as he wanted me to be safe – a face mask to protect against inhaling glass dust and goggles for eye protection in case of any splintering glass were a must! 🙂

So ready with all the necessary equipment, including diamond tipped drill bits, we gave it a go… but it’s not as easy as I thought it would be!!

As you can see from the photo above, we shattered quite a lot of pieces. Many people have kindly given advice and suggestions such as drilling in water, using a small drill bit first before using a bigger piece and also using masking tape. We tried various things but it was tricky. Until we did then succeed in drilling three pieces- yay!

And then a bit later, after quite a few more pieces cracked, I managed three more… 🙂

I’m pretty pleased to have six pieces successfully drilled!

So I will persevere and keep trying… it will be a while before I feel brave enough to try drilling into my nicer pieces of seaglass. But for now I’m really happy to have these pieces which I already have plans for…

I have wound the mini skeins of yarns which i got from Miss Moffat Yarns into little balls…

…and have started a project using ‘Large Shell Stitch’.

I will use the sea glass with this at some point and show you the end results soon! I’ve called this project my ‘part-time’ project as I only have time to dip into it every now and then…but when I do I love working those shell stitches! 🙂

Happy crocheting everyone… 🙂 🙂
