My original blanket was a true stash buster made using only yarns I had in my stash. The variety of stitch combinations and colours were inspired each week by the textures and colours of the seaside.
You can use whichever yarns you like but for the best results make sure they are all the same yarn weight and the same yarn type. You can use as many or as little colours as you like. My original blanket had a total of 16 colours in it (seen above).
My finished blanket using DK acrylic yarns measures approximately 110cm x 130cm (43 x 51in) but the finished size will depend on your tension and chosen yarn type.
Update January 2022:
I have also designed a new ‘Seaside Celebration’ colour way (shown below using 10 colours) to celebrate 4 years since the original blanket was launched. It’s slightly smaller than the original and you can read all about that here: Seaside Celebration Blanket

ORIGINAL BLOG POST – January 2018:
I’m hosting my first ‘Crochet Along’ (CAL) – I’m calling it the ‘Seaside Stash Busting Blanket’ and it would be fabulous if some of you will join me!
Here’s the story behind my idea…
Last week over on Instagram Mollie Makes Magazine hosted ‘Mollie Makers Week’ – each day there was a prompt to share a photo. I was a little late joining in but took part over the last three days where I shared photos of my ‘fave make’, ‘craft stash’ and finally ‘inspiration’.
This is the photo along with my explanation which I shared for ‘craft stash’…
Oh my! Today the prompt is ‘Craft Stash’ for #molliemakersweek – it would be far too embarrassing to show you all of my #craftstash which extends from under our bed, to a basket by the sofa, to a desk in the living room and a cupboard in the hall! It’s not even very well organised I’m afraid!! Having been a maker for all my adult life I’ve accumulated so many things and people who know me and my love of craft have generously given me lots over the years too, especially any unwanted yarn! So here’s just a little snapshot of yarn and fabrics that I brought out into the front garden this morning…
And it’s this photo that really got me thinking about all that yarn and I’ve come up with the fun idea of an unofficial and unplanned ‘Crochet Along’!
Seeing all that yarn under my bed made me really want to use it all to make another blanket but I really don’t want to start a big project like a blanket at the moment- I don’t really have enough time as I have other potential projects and commissions in the pipeline (as well as my day job and family life to keep up with!!!). But how about if I crocheted no more than 4 rows per week and write the pattern as I go? That would mean by about September time (this is going to be a slow CAL!) I’ll have a finished crocheted blanket with the pattern all written up and it wouldn’t have taken over in any way!! 😊
Well that’s what I’ve decided to do and it really would be lovely if you joined me!
I’ll do a blog post each week with the 4 rows worked, together with the written pattern. I’m literally going to make it up as we go along! There’s no pre-planning of colours or stitches… the only rule is that I will only use the DK yarns from my existing stash and do no more than 4 rows per week!
It will be a big blanket and I guess I’ll work about 140 rows meaning if I do 4 rows per week it will take 35 weeks (but I won’t be putting any pressure on myself to finish it by a certain date and I may give myself some weeks off!)
I announced this over on my Instagram on Monday asking if anyone would like to join me and ‘Wow’! – I have been so touched and overwhelmed by the response! I had no idea how many people would want to crochet along with me and I’m so happy that there’s now over 50 people and some are as far away as Australia and the USA! I’m so excited! It’s amazing that there are so many people who are going to join me in this slow and gentle ‘cal’ which will result in a gorgeous blanket, I promise! 😊 😊
(*EDIT* October 2018… many 1000’s of people joined in with this CAL between January and September from over 30 different countries around the world. It became a very special project indeed… ❤️❤️❤️ And many people are starting blankets even now! There’s a thriving Facebook group ‘Coastal Crochet’. All the instructions will remain on my blog in the weekly blog posts so I hope people will make this for many years to come! 😊)
So here goes, first four rows in UK terminology:
Abbreviations: ch: chain, rep: repeat, st(s): stitch(es), tr: treble
With 4.50mm hook (you may prefer using a smaller or larger hook depending on your tension and the yarn you’re using) make 182ch
Row 1 1tr in 4th ch from hook, (3 missed ch count as first tr), 1tr in each ch to end, 3ch (counts as first st of next row), turn (180 sts)
Row 2 Miss first st, 2tr in next st, continue with (miss 1 st, 2tr in next st) to end finishing with 1tr in final st of row and join with a new colour at end of final st, 3ch, turn (89 groups of 2tr with 1 tr at each side)
We are now working ‘V Stitch’ to create the ‘V’s’…
Row 3 Miss first st, continue with (2tr inbetween the sts from previous row) to end, 1tr in final st, join with a new colour at end of final st, 3ch, turn
Row 4 Rep Row 3
And that’s it… four rows started, put it away, get back to other crochet projects and we’ll do another four rows next week…

Hi Cheryl… I have done YouTube tutorials myself for the more complex rows… I provide links to these as we go through the weeks. For the simpler rows any basic crochet book or basic beginner crochet tutorials would be good as they are just simple stitches… so long as they are UK as I use Uk terminology which is a little different to US… good luck!

well started it and now have to rip it out tr in USA terms is a triple not a double so I did the first 4 rows in triple crochet. Oh well it will go faster in double crochet

Hi I am a year late! Question is row 3 crocheted between the stitches?
Yay!! 😁💙 It’s a ‘V’ stitch so insert the hook right between the 2tr stitches themselves, not between the groups of 2tr… hope that makes sense… it’s so the treble stitches are pushed apart to create that V… good luck!

I’ve finally decided to start this blanket after following along from a distance when you originally did the CAL! I’d like to make it as a baby blanket size though, would it work to reduce the number of stitches to make it narrower? I wasn’t sure if it would need to be a certain multiple to fit the different stitches into each row as the blanket progresses!

Hi Vikki… for the rest of the blanket I do have videos for the trickier stitches, but not these. It’s a simple V stitch without a chain. There might be other videos out there that can help…

I’m Michelle’s friend Leanne (mentioned above). Having never picked up a pair of knitting needles or a crotchet hook in my life, I think I’m both excited for the challenge and a little nervous!! Thanks for including us at this late stage – your work is stunning. Just a quick question though. What type of wool are you using? I have had to purchase my wool (no stash to bust here!!) and have bought 8ply wool or wool blend. I’m up to making the bobbles and my blanket just seems really chunky. I prefer the sleeker look of yours and the others I have seen online. I’m thinking I may have to return what I haven’t opened and start again. I would appreciate your advice.

Hi Leanne,
It’s so lovely to hear that you are crocheting along! My blanket and most others being crocheted have used DK yarn which is the 8ply equivalent in Australia… mine is the cheaper 100% acrylic. So I am unsure why yours feels so chunky… maybe you need to go down a hook size? Beginner crocheters are often looser in tension which will make a difference to the overall look and feel and going down to a 4mm hook may help?? Also, although 8ply is 8ply, there is a difference to how yarns look and feel depending on content. I love wool but it does of course feel different to acrylics… so maybe go back to have a look and feel… crochet a little swatch (10cm x 10cm) to see how the yarn crochet’s up…. it would be a shame to spend so long on a blanket that you’re then not happy with so getting it right now is important…. GOOD LUCK! 😊❤️❤️

Hi Karen… lovely that you’re going to crochet the blanket! As for colours, it’s so personal… I just line up the balls of yarn to plan which colour to use next… I just go for the one I like and don’t over think it! Good luck… 😊💙💙
Hi, I am up to row 8 on my blanket. I am having some problems with the stitch count in that I’m finding I have too few or too many. Can you tell me when you chain at the then of the row to start the stitch for the next row, when I turn so I crichetvinto the base of the chain or the next stitch? I think this may be where I’m going wrong. Thanks in advance Lisa
Hi Lisa… that’s exactly it- the turning chains count as a stitch throughout the whole pattern, even on the dc (us sc) rows! So you crochet into the next st, not the st at the base of the turning chains. It can be tricky to spot that ch1 on subsequent rows so it’s a good idea to use a stitch marker in the 1ch turning chains so you can identify it easily on the next row when crocheting back into it- good luck!
Hi Eleonora, I want to start this but I have so much fingering weight yarn in my stash. I will probably use it-should I cast on more chains to start and also what size crochet hook would you suggest? Thanks so much for sharing your pattern.
Hi Gwen… lovely that you’re going to start! It depends on your tension. For fingering or 4ply I would use a 3.5mm hook but you may need to go up or down a size … I suggest trying a little square of crochet first to see which you prefer… the blanket will be smaller but you could try more chains to start with…. I’ve been stalking your Seaside Stashbuster for some time now whilst I finished off a list of knitting projects. But now the time is here! I’ve done very little crochet, so this is going to be a big learning curve. However, I’ve got to get going as, with this in mind, I’ve ‘inadvertently’ bought extra balls of yarn whilst making other things so now have even more stash to bust! By the way, as well as loving looking at your work, I really enjoy seeing your costal scenery and beautiful dog!

I am doing a throw with chunky yard and I used 120 stitches. Hope that helps.

Hi Les… as this was a genuine stash busting pattern which I made up as we went along, I do not have a list of the exact yarns. But I’ve worked out that 10 x100g balls would be enough although I used about 15 different colours for mine. Good luck! 😊💙

I saw the blanket on another yarn shops page that the owner had just finished. Fell in love! I’m using the colours from the Persian Tiles Eastern Jewels pack so mainly Special DK, and using a 5mm hook. It’s beautiful. Been on it now for just 2 weeks and up to row 52, find it so addictive. I’m loving seeing all the different colourways on the FB Group. Already planning to do another in possibley Aran and just 3 colours. Thank you so much for sharing this

Hi there Missi… with so many different stitch combinations it’s going to be a challenge to keep the edges straight so you should definitely stick to the same weight yarn and not mix and match… hope that helps… enjoy it! 😊❤️

I am making good progress on this blanket. I just began crochet in March with the need to stay home. I didn’t have much of a stash, I actually had to buy more yarn. I absolutely love this design! And I just ordered my yarn for the Beachcombing blanket. I live on the coast too, although far away on the west coast of the US. I love your designs with the coast in mind. I see that your pattern is a UK version. Is there someone to view a USA version? I’m not familiar with the UK terminology for crocheting but from reading some of the previous comments it appears that abbreviations may be different. Thanks in advance.

Finally started the SSSB. So excited. If this has been answered sorry. The chain starts with 182 and then you start next with the fourth chain from the hook. That would give you 179 stitches not 180. Are you counting the chain on the hook? I was taught never to count the chain on the hook. Thanks for your help.
Hi Sissy, the missed 3 chains count as your first st so yes, that will then give you 180 sts… the turning chains count as a stitch throughout this blanket. Enjoy it! 😃💙

Hi Eleonora. I have finally plucked up courage to start the Seaside Stashbusting blanket and am loving it! At the start of the week 2 tutorial you’ve said to make sure we have 89 groups of 2tr with 1tr at each end, but somehow I have ended up with 90 pairs of treble. Is this going to be a problem or can I just carry on?

Hi. I love this pattern and indeed, all of your work.
I have already made one of these SSSBs in a cotton acrylic mix. 3 years ago for my Grans 90th Birthday. She has used it EVERY SINGLE DAY since. It has already been decided that when she leaves this Earth, the blanket will be passed down to my Mother. I am contemplating making another but just can’t get my head around how to make it bigger. If anyone could help with this, I would be very grateful. This one will be vibrant Rainbow colours and I can’t wait to start. Bloomin stitch multiples!!! Hahaha. I’ve just purchased the pattern on Etsy and have bought some lovely new wool to do this, (which rather defeats the point of a stash buster!!).
Looking at the pattern from Etsy, row 3 states “miss 2 stitches, 2tr in space between next pair of tr” surely if I miss 2 stitches I won’t end up with the correct stitch count.
I also noticed that the instructions on your blog don’t mention missing 2 stitches.

Hi Claire, lovely to hear you’re making this blanket. In Row 3 you’re working 2 treble inbetween the 2 trebles of Row 2 to push them apart and create the ‘V’. This is the original blog post – the Etsy pattern has been updated in response to feedback to make this row even clearer. You’re doing the same thing but in the Etsy pattern I say to miss 2 stitches as that will bring you to the correct place to work the next 2 trebles. Hi Eleonora, this pattern looks amazing! Can I just ask how many stitches to add if I want to make it bigger (I’ve got wool that require a 4mm or 3.5mm hook)? Was thinking 240 +2, would that work? Hi Natalie… I haven’t based this pattern on a stitch multiple. Because I designed it as we went (it was a 35 week crochet along), I adjusted each row to keep consistent with my 180 sts. But many people have done it smaller or bigger…. so long as you keep consistent with your chosen stitch count and adjust the turning chains accordingly (as you may start and end with a different stitch to me) it will work but needs a little figuring out!
