Asturias, Northern Spain and some crochet along the way…

Oh how lucky I was to spend a weeks holiday in Asturias, Northern Spain with my family at the beginning of the month. It’s such a beautiful part of Spain and in this post I’ll share a little of our holiday and the crochet that, as always, came along with me.

Our holiday began as we boarded the ferry at Portsmouth in the south of England to sail to Santander in the north of Spain. It’s the third time we’ve travelled on this ferry and it’s perfect for us- 24 hours of forced relaxation (and time to crochet) as the ferry takes a whole night and a whole day to get there. We spotted dolphins and whales from deck too as we crossed the Bay of Biscay- absolutely amazing!

And for those of you who follow my Instagram account you may have seen that I posted these photos of the blanket which I started on the ferry and then it’s progress as the holiday week went on…

Once we arrived in Spain we drove just an hour west before arriving at our campsite in the Picos de Europa National Park. We’ve been to this area before and love it so much that it keeps luring us back.

There are snowed capped mountains…

…with sandy beaches just 30 minutes drive away.

We camped in our van…

…which as always we love but the children are growing physically bigger each year so it’s becoming a tighter squeeze! We’re thinking about how we can move forward with this in the future but haven’t decided on the best option yet!

There’s obviously a lot of creativity in the area as you can see in these photos of shop displays we came across…

…and this blanket which was in the holiday apartment which my parents (who came with us to Spain) were staying in.

I did a blog post featuring Durdle Door in Dorset a couple of months ago https://coastalcrochet.com/2016/04/11/crocheting-at-durdle-door-and-lulworth-cove/

so we were really surprised to come across a beach on this holiday that was as impressive as Durdle Door with it’s natural arches but was so quiet by contrast- just stunning!

I saw a Spanish version of ‘Simply Crochet’ magazine and learned what the name of this craft I love is called in Spanish- Ganchillo 🙂

One of the towns we visited had a billboard featuring a little girl wearing a crocheted hat whilst I was able to wear my own hat with it’s crochet trim (we were lucky to have some sunshine although it did rain heavily on a couple of days)

A good holiday was had by all in an area that is truly beautiful. It’s a quiet destination (at this time of year), very different to some other parts of Spain. We filled our days with long walks in the National Park, visits to the coast and of course some time for relaxation – for me just perfect 🙂

And now that we are home, I’m continuing with that blanket and this is how far I’ve got…

…as you can see I’m gradually getting there but still have some way to go!
