Ta Da! The Darcey Dress…

So I’ve finally finished the Darcey Dress from a pattern by Debbie Bliss! Hooray!

P1090565It’s been on my crochet hook since October (along with a few smaller crochet projects in between) and I’m really pleased with the end result 🙂 I think it’s a beautiful design.

Here I am on the beach wearing it!

P1090484It’s been very mild here for this time of year (after a brief cold snap last week) so I wasn’t as cold as you might think on a January day on an English beach!  Although I did dive into my down filled coat and warm sheepskin boots as soon as we’d finished taking the photos! My thoughts are with those in Eastern US – we’ve watched footage of the blizzards and tremendous snow fall on our news.

The dress was a joy to crochet and the yarn (Debbie Bliss Rialto 4ply Merino Wool) was a delight to work with. I struggled with the tension initially, trying to match the pattern requirements, and ended up using a 4.5mm hook (the pattern suggested 3.5mm).

I’ve wanted to make it for sometime having bought the pattern book (Debbie Bliss Simply Crochet) a couple of years ago after seeing a completed version of the dress in a local yarn store. Now that I’m doing the International Diploma in Crochet, I need to submit a completed garment following a pattern – and this is it!

P1090554I’ll be posting it off to be assessed later this week. I really hope it passes the requirements! It’s been a time consuming project and I’d be disheartened it if didn’t pass.

So what to wear underneath it? I could make a simple slip but first I thought I would try and see if I could buy one off the shelf as this would save me time. Well I was very lucky- I walked into Marks and Spencer (a British store which amongst other things is famed for its lingerie) on Saturday with the crochet dress in my bag. I saw a slip, tried it on, and other than needing to shorten it a little, it was ready to go!

P1090583So I now have a lovely dress to wear once the weather warms up -I just need a special occasion to wear it to…

Thanks for looking at the dress with me.

Happy Crocheting Everyone… 🙂

  1. It looks amazing Eleanora. You should be so proud and you deserve to do well with it as a submission for your diploma. The colour and style suit you so well. Roll on the warmer weather!

  2. Looks fabulous! As long as you have the tension right, I’m sure it will pass. My first submission for a commercial pattern (a shawl) was rejected because my tension was way off! It was accepted as a project, just not for the requirement of following a printed pattern. But it sounds like you took care to get the tension right (even swapping hooks to do so), so I bet it gets the thumbs up! 😀

  3. Great job on that dress! It’s absolutely lovely. Here’s crossing my fingers that it will pass the assessment … I honestly think it should 🙂

  4. It is beautiful and it really suits you. I’m sure it doesn’t matter if you changed the hook size to get the tension right – that is what patterns tell you to do afterall

  5. Oh gosh, the dress is absolutely fabulous! I’m really impressed you stuck with it! I haven’t attempted anything that time consuming quite yet, but you are really inspiring. I also had no idea there was a diploma in Crochet. Thanks for telling me (well, the world) about it.

  6. What a stunning dress! And a great idea to go looking for a night dress underneath it. I always wanted to crochet a dress or top – but never knew what to wear under it. I’m not handy with a sewing machine at all… but never thought about something as simple as that!
