A couple of months ago I wrote about ‘gehaakte gordijntjes’ (crocheted curtains) that had been crocheted by my Oma and Mother and are still hanging in our kitchen window today.
These were very popular in The Netherlands in the 1970’s. On our recent holiday to The Netherlands I kept a look out for crocheted curtains still hanging in people’s homes and decided it would be fun to photograph them (much to the annoyance of my children when I kept stopping to take photographs!!)
And gosh there were so many! For any Dutch readers you may find these ‘gehaakte gordijntjes’ a little old fashioned but in England they were never popular or fashionable in the first place so for me the novelty has never worn off!
Here goes..

And some on a houseboat!
They can frame a window or door so beautifully. This one had a gorgeous sunset reflecting in the window too- stunning!
Aren’t they wonderful?! You can only be in The Netherlands and see so many windows and doors framed by crochet!
There’ll be one more Dutch holiday post next week – then I need to get my hook out and start crocheting for the International Diploma in Crochet once more.

Personally, I think the look of them is timeless. Gorgeous.
I am up to my ears in a twin size with a drop ripple for my great niece.
The pattern is interlocking stripes. Sunset colors. Nice, I think. I hope.

Looks like you have plenty of inspiration for your filet compulsory sample when you come round to it! I’ve been thinking (on and off) of doing something similar for my windows, except I like the idea of doing it in a vibrant colour…
Indeed I do! It is remarkable that all the curtains I saw were in classic white/ cream. No colours to be seen…
I love these, so much nicer than the awful net curtains that were popular in the UK at that time – although we never had nets as my Mum couldn’t stand them!

The crochet curtains are one of my favourite things about the Netherlands – the other top favourite being the cycling…
Yes, I agree, the cycling is great too! We did plenty of that 😃
You really managed to find some pretty crochet curtains, makes me feel like bringing out my own ( seventies, white and made by my mum) again!

Gehaakte gordijntjes are cool and both my oma’s had them, too. 🙂
I am still looking for a book with nice patterns so I can make them myself.
