‘Gehaakte Gordijntjes’ (Crocheted Curtains)

A couple of months ago I wrote about ‘gehaakte gordijntjes’ (crocheted curtains) that had been crocheted by my Oma and Mother and are still hanging in our kitchen window today.

These were very popular in The Netherlands in the 1970’s. On our recent holiday to The Netherlands I kept a look out for crocheted curtains still hanging in people’s homes and decided it would be fun to photograph them (much to the annoyance of my children when I kept stopping to take photographs!!)

And gosh there were so many! For any Dutch readers you may find these ‘gehaakte gordijntjes’ a little old fashioned but in England they were never popular or fashionable in the first place so for me the novelty has never worn off!

One of my favourites – a boat motif specially for a boat!

These are the same as mine at home- from a late 1960’s, early 1970’s pattern.

They can frame a window or door so beautifully. This one had a gorgeous sunset reflecting in the window too- stunning!

Aren’t they wonderful?! You can only be in The Netherlands and see so many windows and doors framed by crochet!

There’ll be one more Dutch holiday post next week – then I need to get my hook out and start crocheting for the International Diploma in Crochet once more.

Happy crocheting!

  1. Hi Eleonora,
Personally, I think the look of them is timeless. Gorgeous.
I am up to my ears in a twin size with a drop ripple for my great niece.
The pattern is interlocking stripes. Sunset colors. Nice, I think. I hope.

  2. Looks like you have plenty of inspiration for your filet compulsory sample when you come round to it! I’ve been thinking (on and off) of doing something similar for my windows, except I like the idea of doing it in a vibrant colour…

  3. I love these, so much nicer than the awful net curtains that were popular in the UK at that time – although we never had nets as my Mum couldn’t stand them!

  4. Hi Eleanora!
Glad you could stop by today and see my cat, slug, and the beginning of the crochet blanket. It’s quite a bit bigger than that already. Will post more pix this week. We crochet peeps need our own meme -oh, wait! We have one WIP Wednesday. Maybe I’ll post it then! What are you working on these days?
